LOUISVILLE, Ky. ? The No. 12 Duke field hockey team lost its season-opener Saturday afternoon, falling 1-0 to the host No. 17 Louisville Cardinals in game one of the Champions Challenge tournament at Trager Stadium.
The teams battled evenly throughout the contest and were scoreless at halftime, before preseason All-BIG EAST selection Nicole Youman got Louisville on the board first with a goal five minutes into the second half. Youman's score came off a penalty corner and was the eventual game-winner.
Duke outshot the Cardinals 11-9, as Lauren Miller and Susan Ferger each took three shots on the afternoon for the Blue Devils. Duke took seven first-half shots but none found the net. Youman led all players with five shots.
Playing all 70 minutes in the cage for Duke, sophomore keeper Samantha Nelson recorded four saves, including three in the second half. Duke held the advantage on penalty corners by a count of 11-9.
The loss moves the Blue Devils to 0-1 on the season, while Louisville improved to 1-0. The all-time series now sits at 5-2 in favor of Duke.
The Blue Devils will face the loser of today's second game between No. 10 Michigan State and Delaware, squaring off in the consolation match at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday. Louisville will play the winner in the championship game at 2 p.m.
