10/30/2008 12:00:00 AM | Field Hockey
October 26, 2008 would have been just like any other Sunday in the world of Duke Field Hockey. The team would have gotten up from their beds by approximately 8:30 to make a 9 am appearance at the Devil's Den. We would have dined on our favorite breakfast items: French toast sticks, bananas and peanut butter, toasted bagels, and cheerios. If it were like any other Sunday, we would have made our way over to Williams Field for a brief 9:45 am warm-up jog and corner practice, then returned to the locker room by about 11:30 to get dressed for the match.
October 26, however, was like none other in the history of DUFH. On that crisp, clear day, a newly-installed stadium was dedicated in honor of Jack Katz, for his remarkable funding contributions to the program. Because of Jack, the team now has a grand stadium to house its fans, a regal brick entry way, and a large DUKE FIELD HOCKEY sign posted proudly at the top of the stadium. Jack, a former football star at the University of Florida, and founder of the Panama Jack company, fell in love with Duke Field Hockey on his rehabilitation walks around East Campus. For someone who is not even a Duke alum, a gift of such proportions to one of the University's athletic teams is truly phenomenal.
Before the match began, President Richard Brodhead delivered a speech in which he accredited the field hockey team for its stellar performance thus far in the season and acknowledged all of Jack's efforts in helping to make the team a success. Head coach Beth Bozman and senior captains Laura Suchoski and Marian Dickinson presented Jack with an article of his favorite apparel: a personalized Duke vest. Knowing how much Jack loves to wear dark-colored vests to watch our practices, the captains handed over the small token of thanks with huge smiles on their faces.
As the game began, the team knew it had a task ahead of them, to win Beth her 300th career victory. We had made it clear in all of our video scouting reports on Longwood that we wanted to dominate the game. We wanted to get everybody involved in the match and we wanted a fabulous victory in the name of our head coach. With a crushing force, the team defeated Longwood 6-0. Afterwards, we gave Beth a poster of the team with everyone's signatures on it. The team realized that we are only three more games away from Beth achieving her 100th win at Duke University, and we now set out to help her achieve that goal, too.
The day concluded with a very elegant tailgate provided by the University. Many pictures of the team were taken standing next to the enormous cake which was shaped quite appropriately like a field hockey field and our stadium. We all watched in excitement as Jack cut the first slice of the ?turf' and handed pieces to everyone. The DUFH family celebrated many great victories (on and off the field) that day, and now waits patiently for the festivities that will come as we continue to work towards a 2008 National Championship!
