DURHAM, N.C. ? The No. 5 Duke field hockey team received scoring from four different players Tuesday night, as the Blue Devils downed visiting Ohio University, 4-0, at Williams Field to pick up their fourth consecutive victory and move to 10-3 (2-2).
Duke sported pink jerseys in the contest to raise breast cancer awareness as part of Under Armour's “Power in Pink” series.
The Blue Devils got goals from Amie Survilla, Megan Deakins, Rhian Jones, and Ashley Pultorak in the balanced offensive effort, out-shooting Ohio 18-4 in the contest. Duke led 3-0 at the half after getting on the board first 13 minutes in on Survilla's score, her team-leading eighth goal of the season.
Jones' goal was her first of the season and her career for the freshman.
“In the first half I don't think we executed our game-plan and looked a little lackluster even though we were up 3-0 at that point,” said head coach Beth Bozman. “We were fortunate to get out of the half the way we did, but we talked about things at halftime and really came back and played our game in the second half.”
Despite the flat start, the Blue Devils were able to put three on the board in the first, which all got started with Survilla. Fresh off ACC Co-Player of the Week honors, the junior started the Duke scoring spree with a score from the top of the circle, which she fired in from slightly to the left side off a Marian Dickinson penalty corner. The assist went to Dickinson and stopper Brooke Patterson as the Blue Devils went up 1-0.
The next goal came at the 21:21 mark in the contest as freshman Megan Deakins sent home her fifth of the season, a tip-in off Lauren Miller's initial shot from the top of the circle.
Jones struck next to put Duke up 3-0 on her first career goal, firing the unassisted shot into the back of the cage after the ball deflected to her off an Ohio player with 25 seconds remaining in the first half.
Senior Ashley Pultorak netted her second of the season and Duke's fourth of the evening on a goal in the 42nd minute, tipping the ball into the cage off a hard cross from Tara Jennings on the far right. The goal extended the lead to 4-0 and it stayed there, as the Blue Devils allowed just the four shots on the night and only one on goal. The Blue Devils led 11-2 in penalty corners, as well.
Samantha Nelson picked up her fourth shutout in the cage for Duke, but was barely tested and made one save behind the tough Duke defense. Jessie Martin stopped six shots for Ohio. The Bobcats fell to 6-8 (4-2 MAC) with the loss.
The Blue Devils have now out-shot their opposition 11 times on the year.
Duke rose to No. 5 in the STX/NFHCA Division I Coaches Poll today, coming off a 3-2 upset over then-No. 1 Maryland on Saturday. The Blue Devils will hit the road again for a two-game swing beginning this Friday, Oct. 17 at William & Mary at 7 p.m., followed by a 1 p.m. match-up with Old Dominion on Sunday. Duke defeated the Lady Monarchs earlier in the season at home.
In between games, Duke will hold a high school field hockey clinic at the National Training Center in Virginia Beach, Va. Space is limited. See the attached registration form for more details.
