DURHAM, N.C. ? GoDuke.com caught up with senior goalie Caitlin Williams this week as the Blue Devil field hockey team prepares for the NCAA Tournament. Read on to find out who has had the biggest impact on Williams' career, her pre-game rituals, plus much more.
GoDuke.com: Why do you wear No. 20?
Caitlin Williams: In high school I wore the number two, but that was already taken so I decided to go with 20.
GD: What do you do in your free time?
CW: My free time usually consists of studying, and every once in awhile I will go to a movie with my friends.
GD: If you could change one rule in your sport, what would it be?
CW: The goalkeeper would be able to play outside of the circle, while maintaining the ability to use their feet.
GD: What is your favorite professional team?
CW: The Red Sox
GD: What is the last non-school related book you read?
CW: I have recently read two great books by John Wooden, “My Personal Best” and “They Call Me Coach.” I highly recommend both of them.
GD: What's your favorite TV show?
CW: Law & Order
GD: If you could go backstage at any concert, what would it be?
CW: Journey, when they still had their original lead singer.
GD: Do you have any pregame rituals?
CW: I usually listen to Bobby Knight on my iPod, and I do a lot of mental imagery before warm up and during the national anthem.
GD: What is your best non-athletic talent?
CW: I would say my beautiful vocal skills, however my friends may not agree.
GD: If you could have dinner with four people from history, who would it be and why?
CW: Jesus, because I have roughly a million questions for him; my great grandmother, because I have been told that she was an extraordinary woman; Friedrich Nietzsche, because I find his work to be very unique and interesting; Muhammad Ali, because I admire the confidence he had in himself as an athlete and the pride with which he carried himself.
GD: What are you planning on doing after graduation?
CW: I hope to either enter the world of coaching at the Division 1 level or work for a marketing firm. Graduate school is always an option as well.
GD: Who has had the most impact on your athletic career and why?
CW: I would have to say my family. I have two very supportive parents who always knew when to push me and when to step back. They have supported me financially and emotionally, while enabling me to become independent and go after my own aspirations. I also have to give a lot of credit to my three younger sisters who have been dragged along to all of my sporting events since they were born. They are the ones who high five my achievements and provide the hugs when things don't work out they way I would like. I can easily say that they are my No. 1 fans.
GD: What's your favorite memory to date of your college career?
CW: The first day I walked into the locker room as a freshman and realized that I was a part of something bigger than myself, that I knew would change me as a person forever.
GD: What's the best advice you've ever received?
CW: I could write a book on all the great advice I have been given, but generally it has all come from my dad. He can't have a conversation without providing some kind of inspiring advice.
GD: What is your favorite sport, other than your own, to watch on TV?
CW: NASCAR. Yes, it is a sport.
