DURHAM, N.C. - The Duke field hockey team earned its sixth straight and ninth overall bid to the NCAA Tournament on Tuesday night, as the 16-team field for the 2007 NCAA Field Hockey Championships was announced by the NCAA Division I Field Hockey Committee.
The Blue Devils will face James Madison in opening-round action on Saturday, Nov. 10, at the University of North Carolina's Francis E. Henry Stadium at 2 p.m. Should Duke advance, the Blue Devils will meet the winner of a first-round matchup between rival and top-ranked North Carolina and Stanford on Sunday, Nov. 11, at 2 p.m.
"We're really excited about the opportunity to continue our season and stay close to home," said senior goalkeeper Caitlin Williams. "We're looking forward to the possibility and the opportunity to meet our rivals [North Carolina] again and are excited to play James Madison and for the possible challenge of facing the tournament's top seed."
James Madison brings a national ranking of No. 7 into NCAA Tournament play, along with an overall record of 18-3, while Duke ranks 12th in the nation and holds an overall ledger of 11-8. The two squads squared off against each other in the 2006 NCAA Tournament opening round, as the Blue Devils came away with a 3-2 overtime victory in Durham, N.C.
Duke received one of eight at-large bids to the tournament, after five conferences were awarded automatic bids (Boston University - America East; North Carolina - ACC; Connecticut - BIG EAST; Iowa - Big Ten; James Madison - CAA) and six conferences competed for three play-in berths. The teams winning play-in berths were the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, Ohio University and Stanford University.
"We knew all along that we would have to fight this season because we were so young, and we never stopped fighting," said Duke head coach Beth Bozman. "We've been improving throughout the season with every game and our hard work payed off."
First and second round games will be played at four campus sites on Nov. 10 and 11, as North Carolina, Maryland, Michigan and Connecticut enjoy home field advantage. The University of Maryland, College Park will host the semifinals and final contest on Nov. 16 and 18, respectively, at the Maryland Field Hockey/Lacrosse Complex.
