DURHAM, N.C. - The 11th-ranked Blue Devil field hockey team will travel to Norfolk, Va., this weekend to take on unranked Longwood and 10th-ranked Old Dominion on Saturday and Sunday, respectively, with both games set for 1 p.m. starts at ODU's Foreman Field.
Scouting the Lancers: Longwood heads into Saturday's contest with an overall record of 5-10 (1-3 NorPac), with its last outing resulting in a 3-0 conference loss to Pacific. The Lancers are led by senior midfielder Katie Claxton, who leads the squad in points with 17 on a team-leading seven goals and three assists for the year. Longwood's opponents hold an advantage in shots (227-159), penalty corners (104-79) and goals (41-22), while the Lancers control the save category with 124 to the opposition's 78 stops on the season.
Longwood returns nine starters from a 2006 squad that went 5-13 for the year.
Series History: Duke leads the all-time series with Longwood, 10-2-1, as the Blue Devils last came away with a 5-0 victory in 1989.
Scouting the Lady Monarchs: ODU brings a record of 8-5 into the weekend, including a perfect 5-0 mark in CAA play, as the Lady Monarchs are currently on a seven-game win streak. Old Dominion is led by Titia Beek, who has netted four goals and dished out a team-high eight assists for a squad-leading 16 points on the year, while Kathleen Shea leads the Lady Monarchs in goals with six tallies. ODU is out-scoring its opponents, 31-19, and has notched 75 saves to the opposition's 45 stops, while the Lady Monarchs' foes have out-cornered (90-69) and out-shot (157-137) them on the year. In its first game of th weekend, Old Dominion will host defending NCAA Champion and No. 2 Maryland on Friday.
Old Dominion returns nine letter winners and five starters from a 2006 squad that went 19-4 (8-0 CAA), as the Lady Monarchs were league runners-up. ODU reached the NCAA Tournament first round and finished the season with a national ranking of No. 3.
Series History: Old Dominion leads the all-time series with Duke, 17-7. The last meeting between the two squads occurred earlier this season in Durham and resulted in a 1-0 win for the Lady Monarchs.
Last Time Out: Last Saturday Duke fell to No. 2 Maryland, 4-2, at Williams Field in the Blue Devils' last home game of the season. Sophomore Amie Survilla dribbled around a Maryland defender on the right side of the cage and netted her fourth goal of the season just five and a half minutes into the contest to give Duke a 1-0 lead, but Maryland scored at the 31:20 mark to tie the score at one all, where it would remain through halftime.
To start the second half, the Terrapins attempted four shots in the initial five minutes, but senior goalie Caitlin Williams saved three while one went wide. At the 43:59 mark, Maryland gained a 2-1 lead, but Duke battled back and Survilla connected on a penalty stroke for her second tally of the day and fifth of the season to knot the score at 2-2. The Terrapins then took a 3-2 lead with 18 minutes left to play, and later converted on a penalty corner to increase their advantage to 4-2, as Maryland came away with the win.
The Terrapins out-shot the Blue Devils, 17-8, and also held a 9-2 advantage in penalty corners. Williams secured seven saves on the day for Duke, while Kathryn Masson was credited with two saves for Maryland.
Duke in the Rankings: The Blue Devils currently rank 11th in the STX/NFHCA Poll, released on Oct. 9. Archrival North Carolina remains in the top spot and Maryland ranks second, as both squads are undefeated going into the weekend at 14-0. Wake Forest (7-4) ranks third and Iowa (11-2) sits at No. 4, while Michigan (9-4) comes in at No. 5. All six ACC schools are ranked in the top 20, as Boston College (8-5) is listed at No. 12 and Virginia (7-6) comes in at No. 19.
A Look Ahead: Duke will play its final non-conference contests next weekend in Newark, Del., as the Blue Devils take on Delaware (Oct. 20 - 1 p.m.) and Penn (Oct. 21 - 1 p.m.) at the University of Delaware's Rullo Stadium. The following weekend, Duke closes out the regular season at Virginia (Oct. 27 - 1 p.m.).
DUFH News & Notes: Sophomore Amie Survilla secured her third career multiple-goal outing versus No. 2 Maryland last weekend, as she now ranks second on the squad in goals (five) and points (10) ... junior Marian Dickinson leads Duke in goals (six), assists (six) and points (18) ... Dickinson was named ACC Field Hockey Player of the Week on Oct. 2 following a four-goal weekend versus BC and BU ... senior goalie Caitlin Williams ranks first in the ACC in saves (79) and saves per game (6.08), fourth in save percentage (.767) and fifth in goals against average (1.83) ... she ranks 23rd nationally in saves per game and 26th in save percentage... Williams' 79 saves on the season surpass her season total of 74 from a year ago ... Duke holds a 187-170 shot advantage over its opponents on the season, and has also tallied 96 penalty corners to the opposition's 87 ... The Blue Devils have outscored their foes, 27-24, and Williams has recorded 79 saves for the Blue Devils on the year to opponents' keepers 76 stops ...
