DURHAM, N.C. - The fourth-ranked Duke field hockey team fell to No. 7 Boston College at Williams Field on Saturday by a 2-1 double overtime decision. The Blue Devils fall to 7-3 (1-2 ACC) while the Eagles improve to 9-2 (2-1 ACC).
Sophomore Marian Dickinson got the Blue Devils on the board nine minutes into the game, as classmate Laura Suchoski found Dickinson near the net. The goal was Dickinson's 12th of the season, as Suchoski recorded her third assist on the year.
Duke held their 1-0 lead through the halftime break and the bulk of the second half, until Boston College's Crystal Frates scored for the Eagles to tie the game at one apiece with 17 minutes remaining in regulation. Neither team was able to score, as the game was forced into overtime.
The first overtime period saw Eagle goalkeeper record five saves on seven Duke shots. The Blue Devil defense allowed just one shot attempt in the period, and allowed the Eagles zero penalty corner opportunities while getting four of their own. Each team was held scoreless, as a second overtime period was forced.
At the 93:29 mark, BC's Bob Dirks took the Eagles' lone shot of the period and netted her 10th goal of the season to give the Eagles a 2-1 victory.
Junior Blue Devil goalie Caitlin Williams notched one save as the Duke defense allowed just five total BC shot attempts. The Blue Devils got off 28 shots on the day and were given 17 penalty corners, while giving the Eagles just one. Berkowitz posted 15 saves on the day for BC.
Today's extra-time game was Duke's third consecutive of its kind and fourth of the year, as the Blue Devils are 2-2 in OT matchups on the season. All four overtime matchups have been between ranked teams.
Duke is set to meet Harvard (0-8) on Sunday at Williams Field at 1 p.m. Beginning next weekend, the Blue Devils will hit the road for five straight games, starting off at No. 1 Maryland on Oct. 7.
