DURHAM, N.C. - The fifth-ranked Duke field hockey team fell to 6-2 on the season on Sunday following a 4-3 double-overtime loss to third-ranked Old Dominion at Williams Field. Sophomore Marian Dickinson recorded her second consecutive hat trick, scoring three goals for the Blue Devils on the day.
Nine and a half minutes into the game, Dickinson recorded her first goal off a rebounded shot. Less than two minutes later, the sophomore scored her second goal of the day on an assist from senior Hilary Linton, as the Blue Devils went up 2-0.
Old Dominion's Dana Sensenig then got the Lady Monarchs on the board, scoring at the 16:34 mark to make the score 2-1 in favor of Duke.
Dickinson struck again just before halftime, as she netted her third goal on an assist by Ashley Pultorak. The goal marked Dickinson's 11th of the season and sixth of the weekend, as she posted her second hat trick in two days and third of her career.
Old Dominion would then net two goals in the second half to tie the game at three a piece and force the game into overtime.
The first overtime period saw Duke get off two shots and Old Dominion get off three, but both teams' defenses forced a scoreless period, as the game went into double overtime.
Caroline Nichols of Old Dominion then netted the game-winner with just under six minutes remaining in the period, to give the Lady Monarchs a 4-3 victory. Old Dominion improved to 7-1 with the win, as Duke fell to 6-2.
“It was an important game; they knew it and we knew it,” said Duke head coach Beth Bozman. “Both teams put it out there today.”
Duke got off 11 shots on the day while Old Dominion attempted 18. Blue Devil goalie Caitlin Williams recorded eight saves on the day, as Old Dominion's Kelly Driscoll recorded three. Duke received seven penalty corners while the Lady Monarchs had six.
The Blue Devils' next opponent will be No. 4 North Carolina, as Duke plays host to its ACC rival next Saturday, Sept. 23 at 1 p.m. at Williams Field.
