DURHAM, N.C. - With the temperature hovering around 50 degrees, the Duke Blue Devils posted a 3-1 victory over the American Eagles in the first round of the 2003 NCAA Field Hockey Tournament at Williams Field Saturday.
In its fifth all-time NCAA apperance, Duke (18-3) advanced past the first round for the second straight season and third time in its history while American ended its season with a 17-4 record after making its first-ever NCAA appearance.
After five corner opportunities in the first half, Duke finally broke the scoreless tie at the 29:13 mark when sophomore Nicole Dudek notched her 12th goal of the season. Duke controled the first half, outshooting the Eagles 10-3 and gaining five penalty corners to the Eagles zero. The first half ended with Duke up 1-0.
The Eagles quickly changed the momemtum of the game in the second half as sophomore Maureen Daniel tied the game 1-1 with her 10th goal of the season at the 38:46 mark off the Eagles second penalty corner. With the goal, Daniel has registered points in 15 of the Eagles' 21 games in 2003. Senior Melissa Snyder registered her 60th career point with an assist and in doing so became the seventh American player to reach the 60-point plateau.
Duke again turned the momentum and took a 2-1 lead as junior Gracie Sorbello scored her 20th goal of the season at the 48:27 mark. Junior Johanna Bischoff dished out her Duke record 26th assist of the season. Bischoff is already the all-time assist giver in school history (41st of career). Sorbello became just the second Blue Devil in history to record 20 goals in a season, joining Melissa Panasci who scored 20 or more three times from 1995-97.
Duke took a 3-1 lead at the 61:19 mark when sophomore Katie Grant notched her 19th goal of the season. Junior Suzanne Simpson recorded her third assist of the season on the goal. Grant moved into a fifth-place tie with Corey Ceccolini for most goals in a season.
Sophomore Kirsten Bostrom played a solid defensive game, helping the Blue Devils limit American to five shots on goal. American's Laura Miller was strong between the pipes for the Eagles, collecting seven saves including a save on a penalty shot late in the first half.
Duke advances to play the winner of the Richmond-Old Dominion game Sunday at 2 p.m. ET at Williams Field.
