GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina slotted in three goals with one minute remaining to make it a one-score game, but the Blue Devils outlasted the Pirates in Tuesday evening's win, 14-13, at Johnson Stadium. Duke improves to 8-3 overall, while ECU falls to 2-6.
The Duke offense saw eight different scorers, led by hattricks from sophomore
Bella Goodwin and senior
Carly Bernstein. Graduate student
Callie Hem and sophomore
Caitlin Barrett each found the back of the cage twice, while senior
Mattie Shearer, freshman
Sadie Stafford, senior
Kerry Nease and redshirt sophomore
Ava Biancardi each scored one.
Defensively, Shearer led Duke with career-high three caused turnovers and redshirt goalie
Kennedy Everson had seven saves. With her fifth save of the game, she recorded her 200th career save.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Goodwin scored the first goal of the game at 12:53, converting her free-position shot.
- ECU made it 1-1 with 10:41 remaining in the first quarter, but Duke responded at 9:35 with a Shearer goal.
- At 6:37, the Pirates buried their free position shot for to tie the game at 2-2. With 3:24 remaining in period one, Bernstein got on the scoresheet, giving Duke the short-lived 3-2 lead, as she dodged a defender and slipped the ball into the back of the cage. ECU tied it back up at 3-3 less than a minute later.
- To start the second quarter, the Pirates scored a free position shot, taking their first lead of the game at 4-3.
- Duke tied the game, 4-4, starting a four-goal scoring run with 6:18 remaining in the first half with a goal from Stafford. With 5:07 remaining, Nease retook the Duke lead, 5-4, scoring off a defensive transition.
- With just over two minutes remaining in the second period, Shearer stutter-stepped to separate from her defender, finding the back of the cage, and increasing the Blue Devils' lead to 6-4. Less than a minute later, a quick stick from Hem off a Bernstein feed sent Duke into halftime leading 7-4.
- The Blue Devils outshot the Pirates 14-11 in the first half and led 8-5 in the draw circle. Everson recorded seven saves in the first half, surpassing 200 career saves.
- ECU snapped Duke's scoring run at 2:44 into the second half; however, Shearer scored less than a minute later to keep the three-goal lead, 8-5.
- Goodwin made it 9-5 for Duke, scoring her second goal of the game with 11:36 remaining in the third quarter. ECU used two goal-scoring run to decrease Duke's lead to 9-7. Goodwin scored her third goal, and the final goal of the third period, with 3:32 remaining to give the Blue Devils the 10-7 lead.
- ECU opened the final quarter of the game with a two-score run to make it a one-goal game. Bernstein scored with 8:47 left in the game to increase Duke's lead to 11-9, but the Pirates responded with a goal a minute later, making it a one-goal game once again.
- Biancardi started a Duke three-goal run, as she scored her first goal of the game with 6:35 remaining to give the Blue Devils a two-goal buffer, 12-10. Hem scored to made it 13-10 with 3:35 remaining in the game. Bernstein gave Duke the 14-10 advantage, scoring her third goal of the game off a redshirt sophomore Eva Pronti assist.
- The Pirates made it a one-goal game, 14-13, scoring goals stretching from 55 seconds remaining to 23 seconds, but Duke outlasted ECU for the 14-13 win.

- With the win, Duke extended its series lead to 8-0 and 4-0 at ECU.
- Duke recorded its third road win this season.
- Head coach Kerstin Kimel recorded her 358th career win and 354th win at Duke.
- Everson recorded 200 career saves with her fifth today.
- The win marks Duke's 11th consecutive game with 10 or more goals
- Goodwin surpassed 30 goals this season with her second of the game.
- Goodwin scored her fifth hattrick and marked her seventh game of the season with three or more goals.
