HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Defense was the story of the opening stanza as the teams combined for 10 shots, nine turnovers (five caused) and five saves, but just two goals across the 15 minutes. Duke peppered the Florida State netminder Julia Ward with seven shots during the quarter, but Ward was up to the task, collecting three saves.
- Biancardi got the Blue Devils on the board just over a minute into the game, slotting one home after scooping up a loose ball. The Seminoles got one back at the 12:42 mark to knot the score at one.
- The second quarter was a back-and-forth affair across the first 11 minutes as both teams began to find their offensive footing. Biancardi cashed in two goals to complete her hat trick, with Barrett and sophomore Avery Doran also delivering tallies. Goodwin provided the helpers on two of the three goals.
- Duke continued to bring the heat and used a three-goal spurt at the end of the quarter to turn a 5-5 tie with 3:40 remaining in the half into an 8-5 lead at the break. Whitaker cashed one in and Biancardi added two more tallies to her total, with Pronti providing the assist on all three.
- FSU opened the second half with three unanswered to tie the game, 8-8, with just under seven minutes left in the third.
- After their first three shots of the period were turned away, the Blue Devils were finally able to push one through with 19 seconds remaining, as sophomore Sadie Stafford connected with Pronti for a score to reclaim a 9-8 lead.
- Duke carried the momentum from the end of the third stanza into the start of the fourth, with Whitaker and Goodwin netting early goals to create an 11-8 advantage at the 10-minute mark.
- The Seminoles briefly halted the visitor's momentum with a tally at the 8:39 mark, cutting the deficit to two.
- Goodwin had the answer for Duke, converting back-to-back free position goals to push the Blue Devil advantage to four with 2:53 to go in regulation.
- FSU responded with a goal 30 seconds later to pull within three, but that would be as close as the home team would get the remainder of the game.
- Barrett and Whitaker would register their second and third markers of the afternoon, respectively, shortly after to put the finishing touches on the victory.
