DURHAM, N.C. – Along with the 12 returning letterwinners from last season, the Duke softball program also welcomed 10 newcomers in six freshman and four transfers. During the fall, GoDuke.com will be spotlighting each of the 10 newcomers ahead of the 2026 campaign.
The next Blue Devil spotlight is freshman catcher
Gabriella Shadek. Shadek, a native of Kinnelon, N.J., is in her first season with the Blue Devils after graduating from Immaculate Heart Academy. She was a four-year letterwinner on the softball team and owns the Immaculate Heart Academy single season home run record with 15 on the year. Shadek has earned numerous accolades, both on and off the field, including being named the 2024 North Jersey Player of the Year. The rookie was a two-time First Team All-State honoree and three-time honor roll selection.
GoDuke.com: What do you like most about Duke so far?
Gabriella Shadek: Being a newcomer at Duke is really important to me. The fact that I am able to come here to play shows people my hard work and dedication to the sport.
GD: What is your favorite part about softball?
GS: My favorite part of softball is getting to work with people to compete and wins games. I think it helps teach you some valuable lessons in life.
GD: What makes Duke different from where you grew up?
GS: The environment at Duke is a lot more competitive than it is at home. People are a lot nicer here and always want the best for you.
GD: What are some of your favorite hobbies outside of softball?
GS: Outside of softball, I like playing ice hockey, lifting, playing with my dogs and baking.
