DURHAM β The honors continue to roll in for Duke goalkeeper
Piper Hampsch. Fresh off being named the ACC Field Hockey Defensive Player of the Week, the Blue Devil senior has been selected as the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division I Defensive Player of the Week for her efforts last weekend. Β
Hampsch garners the recognition for the second time in her career. The Blue Devil captain posted consecutive shutouts as Duke beat No. 6 Syracuse, 4-0, and Old Dominion, 1-0.
In the 2-0 weekend for the Blue Devils, Hampsch made 7-0 saves to stretch her shutout streak to 136:54. On Friday night, the senior captain came up big in the first quarter with a save on a penalty corner to keep the Blue Devils up 1-0 against No. 6 Syracuse. She added two more saves in the second half and anchored a superb defensive effort as Duke rolled to the 4-0 win over the Orange.
Coming back two days later, Hampsch was instrumental in Duke edging a tough Old Dominion squad, 1-0. The native of Hopedale, Mass., made four saves, including two in the first quarter, to post her eighth career shutout and second of the season.
Hampsch posted back-to-back shutouts for the second time in her career and pushed her career saves total to 226. She is 12 away from tying for eighth in Duke history. She currently sports a 1.01 goals against average to rank fourth in the ACC and 12th nationally. Duke's 0.98 goals against average overall is eighth in the country.
Duke's No. 5 ranking is the program's highest since it was fifth heading into the final week of the 2019 regular season. The Blue Devils are set to take on No. 11 Boston College and No. 15 Harvard on the road this weekend. First hit against the Eagles is set for Sept. 22 at 5 p.m., on ACCNX. The Blue Devils and Crimson match up Sept. 24 at noon on ESPN+.
