HARRISONBURG, Va. β Duke sophomore
Julia Boehringer scored a pair of goals to lead the ninth-ranked Blue Devils to a commanding 5-0 victory at No. 19 James Madison Sunday afternoon.
Alaina McVeigh added a goal and an assist in the victory as Duke had four different goal scorers in the game. Defensively, the Blue Devils held JMU to only five shots and three penalty corners.
How it Happened
- The Blue Devils jumped out in front in the second minute with Boehringer capitalizing on a deft touch from McVeigh inside the penalty circle. After having its penalty corner shot blocked across the baseline, Duke worked the ball around and put it back inside the circle. McVeigh got her stick on the ball to direct it across the face of the goal to a wide-open Boehringer for the finish.
- Duke's stalwart defense from Friday continued against James Madison, holding the Dukes without a shot in the first quarter.
- McVeigh made it a 2-0 game early in the second quarter with a successful penalty stroke. Shae Wozniak started the action, forcing Molly Schreiner to make a save. Juliette Schulten collected the loose ball and earned the foul, leading to the penalty stroke.
- Boehringer added her second of the afternoon with a well-place drag just under the pads of Schreiner off the insert from Maggie Kondrath and trap by Paige Bitting.
- Sporting a 3-0 lead after two quarters, the Blue Devils kept up their intensity in the third frame. Duke extended its lead to four goals late in the period as freshman Lily Soldan fired a shot between the pads of Schreiner for her first career goal.
- Macy Szukics made it a 5-0 score as her sweep from a James Madison defender deflected into the goal. Brynn Crouse provided the insert for the assist.
- Duke outshot James Madison, 15-5, and held a 7-3 advantage in penalty corners. Kaiya Chepow and Brooke Borzymowski both had a save in the shutout effort.
