EUGENE, Ore. – The 16th-ranked Duke women's track and field team notched a historic day of competition at the NCAA Outdoor Championships on Thursday, highlighted by graduate student
Lauren Hoffman's advancement to the national final of the 400m hurdles following a spectacular performance in the semifinal.
Hoffman smashed her own program record for the fourth time this season and second consecutive meet to secure the automatic qualifier and book her spot in Saturday's event final. The Haymarket, Va., native clocked a personal best of 55.47 seconds and finished with the third-fastest overall time of the semifinal.
The women's 4x100m relay, senior
Dana Baker and junior
Emily Cole also concluded their respective historic outdoor seasons with All-America Second Team honors.
Duke's quartet of
Abby Geiser,
Kelcie Simmons,
Halle Bieber and
Chyler Turner turned in another brilliant effort as they finished in a season-best time of 44.04 seconds (16th), improving their second-fastest program time in the process.
Baker registered the furthest throw of her career on the biggest stage. On her second attempt, the Olathe, Kan., native launched the javelin 52.47m (172-1 feet) for a new personal best, improving her No. 2 all-time Duke mark. The throw was good for 13th among the field. With the throw, Baker became the third Duke woman to achieve All-America Second Team honors in the event, joining the elite company of Katelyn Gochenour (2017) and Christine Streisel (2017).
Cole finished the 3000m steeplechase semifinal in 9:57.09 to place 15th overall. Her performance made her the just the third Duke woman in program lore, and the first in 13 years, to be named an All-American in the event. Cole joins the likes of Patricia Loughlin (2009) and Liz Wort (2005) as the only Blue Devils to achieve the feat.
