WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Rookie
Andrew Yu finished 2-for-3 with a double but it wasn't enough as the Blue Devils came up short, 6-3, to Wake Forest on Saturday night at David F. Couch Ballpark in Winston-Salem.
Â
Duke dropped the series to the Demon Deacons and fall to 13-18 overall and 3-11 in ACC play. Wake Forest improves to 24-7 (8-6 ACC).
Â
Yu's multi-hit performance was the third of his career and his first since March 4 against Bucknell. Graduate student
Wil Hoyle recorded his first home run of the season, a two-run shot in the second inning.
Â
Sophomore southpaw
Luke Fox earned his eighth start of the season. Fox allowed four runs on four hits and five walks in 2.2 innings of work. Fox, a native of Waukesha, Wis., fanned seven in the outing. Wake Forest's Josh Hartle opposed Fox, allowing three runs, two earned, on two hits and a walk.
Â
Duke created a run in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead without recording a hit. Freshman
Alex Mooney walked to lead off the game and stole second before moving to third on a passed ball. Mooney scored on an RBI fielder's choice by junior
Chad Knight. Wake Forest answered with a run of their own in the bottom frame.
Â
The Blue Devils retook the lead in the top of the second. With two outs, Yu collected  a two-base knock to right field before Hoyle battled from an 0-2 count in the next at-bat and carried the ball over the left field wall for the two-run homer.
Â
Wake Forest answered Duke's runs, scoring four runs in the next three innings to take a 5-3 lead. The hosts added one more in the bottom of the seventh to bring the game's final score, 6-3. The Blue Devils threatened in the ninth inning, putting runners on first and second with no outs but Wake Forest was able to get out of the jam.
Â
Freshman
Jonathan Santucci was strong in relief. The Leominster, Mass., native matched his career high of five strikeouts while allowing just one run on one hit in a career-high 3.1 innings of work.
Â
Duke and Wake Forest conclude the series on Sunday at 1 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra.
