DURHAM, N.C. - A five-run first inning for Wake Forest was the difference in Thursday's series opener, as the Demon Deacons (37-17, 15-13 ACC) defeated Duke, 7-2, at Jack Coombs Field on May 14.
The Blue Devils (24-29, 9-19 ACC) fell behind early after five unearned runs in the top of the first but held the visitors to just two runs the rest of the way.
Jake Lambdin and
RJ Hamilton each drove in a run for Duke's offense.Â
Peter Lemke made the start on the mound and struck out five alongside just one earned run in 4.0 innings of work.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- A trio of errors allowed Wake Forest to score five runs in the top of the first. The Demon Deacons tacked on another run in the third with consecutive doubles.Â
- Both pitching staffs worked clean frames in the fourth and fifth before the visitors increased their lead to 7-0 with a sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth.
- The Blue Devils plated both of their runs in the bottom of the eighth. Tyler Albright drew his third walk of the day and scored on a Jake Lambdin double down the left field line. Three pitches later, RJ Hamilton doubled down the other line, bringing Lambdin home.
- Both teams had a runner reach second base in the ninth inning, but the score remained the same as Wake Forest took the 7-2 victory.
