DURHAM, N.C.— Duke fell to Wake Forest, 7-2, Friday evening at Jack Coombs Field. The Blue Devils (24-30, 9-20 ACC) fell behind by four runs in the first four innings before cutting the deficit in half, but were unable to draw any closer.
Matthew Strand clobbered his team-leading 13th home run of the season and
Michael DiMartini added an RBI single to pace Duke's offense.
How It Happened
- After a scoreless first inning, Wake Forest grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the second following a leadoff double and a wild pitch that pushed Matt Conte to third base. The Demon Deacons' third batter drove one to right center to plate the first run of the game, before Aidan Weaver regained his composure on the mound for three consecutive outs to get out of the inning.
- Duke threatened in the bottom of the third inning, putting runners on first and second with two outs. The Blue Devils were unable to capitalize and headed to the fourth trailing by a single run.
- Wake Forest scored three runs in the top of the fourth to extend its lead to 4-0.
- The Blue Devils got two back in the bottom half of the inning to cut the Demon Deacons' lead. Matthew Strand started things off with a solo shot over the left-field wall. Collin Anderson next reached first on a fielding error and stole second to get into scoring position. A single to right field by Michael DiMartini pushed Anderson across the plate to make it a 4-2 game.
- The Demon Deacons added an insurance run in the sixth, stretching Wake Forest's lead back to three, 5-2.
- The visitors scratched across another run in the eighth and homered in the ninth, building a five-run lead, 7-2.
- Wake Forest secured the final three outs of the game to post its 38th win of the year.
- Weaver was charged with the loss for Duke, while Troy Dressler earned the win for the Demon Deacons.
