DURHAM – Junior
Marcus Johnson struck out a career-high 12 batters and Duke tallied a season-high 15 hits for a commanding 17-1 win over Bucknell on Friday evening at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park in downtown Durham.
Â
Graduate student
Chris Davis led the Blue Devils offensively with a 4-for-4 performance with three RBIs and a walk. Davis' four hits were a career high, and he was a double shy of the cycle. Freshman
Andrew Yu also had a productive day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double and four RBIs.
Â
"Chris had a terrific ballgame," head coach
Chris Pollard said. "He did a great job hitting in two strike counts and was ready to ambush pitches 0-0. Just a complete performance."
Â
Johnson was electric for the Blue Devils, recording his first quality start of the season. The Fontana, Calif., native allowed just one run on five hits and one walk while fanning 12 of the 25 batters he faced. He earned the win for Duke, improving to 1-2 on the season. Bucknell's Ben Magovern was tagged with the loss after surrendering five runs on six hits and a walk.
Â
The Blue Devils opened the scoring in the bottom of the second as Yu and
Jonathan Santucci each drove in a run. Bucknell used consecutive doubles to pull one back in the top of the third, 2-1.
Â
Duke added to its lead in the bottom of the fourth with a three-run inning. Graduate student
Chris Crabtree led off the inning with a walk, followed by back-to-back home runs by junior
Graham Pauley and Davis.
Â
The Blue Devils offense continued throughout the game, as the bottom of the fourth kicked off five consecutive innings with a score. Crabtree drove in freshman
Alex Mooney for the lone run in the fifth. Davis led off the sixth with a triple, before scoring on a single by Yu.
Â
Duke scored four more in the seventh inning. After a hit by pitch and a walk, the Blue Devils strung together four consecutive hits with one out, capped off by a two RBI double by Yu to bring the game to 12-1.
Â
Six runs crossed the plate for Duke in the eighth inning. Junior
Grant Norris singled up the middle to plate graduate student
Ben LaSpaluto for the first score of the inning, followed by a two RBI double by Davis. Freshman
Devin Obee recorded his first career home run, blasting a ball over the blue monster in left field for a three-run shot.
Â
Duke closed in stellar fashion, retiring the final 12 Bison batters. Sophomore
Adam Boucher pitched in relief of Johnson, retiring the minimum batters in two innings of work with two strikeouts. Rookie
Ryan Higgins finished the game for the Blue Devils, striking out two of three batters faced in the ninth.
Â
Duke and Bucknell continue the series with game two on Saturday at 1 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra and on radio on the Varsity Network App.
