TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Duke baseball team dropped the series opener to seventh-ranked Florida State, 4-0, on Friday night at Dick Howser Stadium in Tallahassee, Fla.

The Blue Devils dip to 11-11 (2-5 ACC) on the season. Florida State moves to 15-6 overall and 5-2 in ACC play.

Chad Knight led Duke at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a pair of singles.

Marcus Johnson started for the Blue Devils, allowing four runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out nine in six innings of work. Johnson was tagged with the loss. Florida State southpaw Parker Messick, last season's ACC Pitcher of the Year, earned the win after throwing seven shutout innings with 14 strikeouts.

The Seminoles opened the scoring in the bottom of the third inning, putting runners on second and third with no outs. The hosts hit a double in the next at-bat, a ground ball that took a wild hop over the Duke shortstop's head to plate the pair of runs. Johnson bounced back after the unlucky break, retiring the next three batters.

Florida State increased its lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the sixth inning with a pair of solo home runs.

Josh Allen entered in relief for Duke. Allen was strong, allowing just one hit and fanning four in two scoreless innings pitched.
