WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.βWake Forest scored a pair of goals in the second quarter and kept the Blue Devils off the scoreboard for a 3-0 win in ACC field hockey Sunday afternoon at Kentner Stadium.

How it Happened
- The Blue Devils outshot Wake Forest, 13-7, for the game and won the penalty corner battle, 8-1, but were unable to put the ball in the back of the cage. The one corner given up by Duke is the second time this season the Blue Devils have held their opponent to a single penalty corner.
- Wake Forest grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute as Meike Lanckohr sent a pass across the front of the cage where Grace Delmotte was able to get a stick on it and knock it in for her fourth goal of the year.
- With momentum in Wake Forest's favor the Demon Deacons extended their lead to 2-0 on a goal from Rachel Thetford. Hannah Maxwell was credited the assist.
- In the first quarter, the Blue Devils earned a penalty corner on their first trip into the scoring circle. Josephine Palde fired a shot towards the back post looking for a redirect, but it was deflected over the endline by the Demon Deacons.
- Just minutes later, it was senior Josie Varney nearly capitalizing on a Wake Forest defensive miscue. Demon Deacon goaltender Ellie Todd was there on the post to get just enough of the ball to keep it out the back of the cage.
- Duke controlled possession throughout much of the first quarter, outshooting Wake Forest, 4-2, and earning a pair of penalty corners. After a couple of early shots for Wake Forest, the Demon Deacons struggled to find a rhythm against Duke's defense.
- Trailing 2-0, the Blue Devils created a few scoring opportunities in the third quarter. Junior Barb Civitella was denied by Todd from the right side after an initial block by the Wake Forest defense, while Kelsey Reznick had her chance from a penalty corner blocked. Duke outshot Wake Forest, 3-0, in the period.
- Wake Forest put the game out of reach for the Blue Devils, scoring on a well-executed penalty corner in the 48th minute. Maggie Dickman was the goal scorer for the Demon Deacons after a sweep from Delmotte.
- After the goal from Wake Forest, the Blue Devils dominated the final 12 minutes of the fourth quarter as they outshot Wake Forest, 6-0. Senior Mary Harkins nearly snuck in her shot off the penalty corner, but Todd was able to kick it away to preserve her shutout.
- Graduate student goaltender Grace Brightbill made three saves in the cage for Duke, while Todd finished with five.

Quotes
Coach Pam Bustin on the game
"I thought we dominated play in the fourth quarter. We had the ball the whole time. They only had one circle entry in the fourth quarter, and they get the corner. We're playing some good hockey, we just have to be more disciplined and organized on both ends of the fields β in front of both goal cages. That is a mindset and that is a training that we're just going to continue to do. We have the people to do it we just have to continue the training."
On the positives of outshooting Wake Forest
"I think that's the story of every game we have played so far. We are creating things and we're in every game as far as the competitive nature of the game. It's the final finishing moments that we've got to β and it comes back to the discipline of being mindful on how to either finish it to put the ball in the cage or how to just lock down as a unit to keep it out of the cage. They had one corner β that's good defense. That's really good defense. Now we have to defend it β it was really well executed. But we've got to be able to execute it on the other end at the eight. It's frustrating because of the hockey we're playing, we're not the team that's carrying this record, but it's about scoring goals, so we've got to do our darndest at practice and execute on gameday on keeping it out and putting it in."
