DURHAM – Duke pulled within one with 25 minutes remaining but couldn't find the equalizer in the end as sixth-ranked Virginia edged the No. 25 Blue Devils in ACC field hockey action Friday evening on Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium.
Duke trailed Virginia 3-1 at half and made it a one-goal game on an
Issy Carey penalty stroke with 23:34 remaining the game. The Blue Devils held the Cavaliers to just one shot and one penalty corner in the fourth quarter but were unable to find the answer on the other end of the field. Duke moves to 4-8 overall and 0-4 in league action, while Virginia moves to 8-3 and 3-1.
How it Happened
- Virginia came out on the front foot in the opening quarter, firing off seven shots and earning five penalty corners. The Blue Devils backline was up to the task in holding the Cavaliers scoreless in the first 15 minutes with graduate student goaltender Grace Brightbill making three saves.
- The Cavaliers wasted no time in the second quarter, needing just 23 seconds to grab the 1-0 lead. Annie McDonough passed a ball in from the endline where Dani Mendez-Trendler tapped it under Brightbill as she tried to get down for her fourth save of the evening.
- Duke equalized four minutes later as senior captain Hannah Miller capitalized off a blocked shot by Carey on the penalty corner. Miller, after her insert, stepped to the near post and knocked in the ball bouncing around the circle for her third goal of the year.
- The tie was short-lived for the Blue Devils as Virginia responded to take the lead 55 seconds later and the went up two goals with 13 seconds left in the half. Noa Boterman had a hit off the penalty corner, while Laura Janssen tapped in her shot off a rebound of a Brightbill save.
- The Blue Devils came out in the third quarter and got into a rhythm. Duke slowed down the Cavalier offense and started to create its opportunities in the offensive third.
- Junior Charlie van Oirschot sent a fabulous through pass to classmate Barb Civitella who found herself alone in the circle with Virginia goaltender Jet Trimborn. Civitella dribbled to try to beat Trimborn, forcing the rookie netminder to commit a foul for a penalty stroke. Carey stepped to the dot and fired it in to make it 3-2.
- While the Blue Devils held Virginia to just one shot in the final frame, they were unable to get anything going in their offensive end as Virginia held on for the 3-2 victory.
- Duke held Virginia to just three shots in the second half after being outshot 15-2 in the first two quarters. The Cavaliers outshot Duke 18-4 for the game and won the penalty corner battle 10-1.
- Brightbill earned her second consecutive start in the goal, making six saves for the Blue Devils. Piper Hampsch played the second half and made two stops. Trimborn did not make a save for Virginia.
Notes
- Duke junior goalkeeper Piper Hampsch came off the bench in the second half to make two saves to push her career total to 200. She is the 10th Duke netminder to amass 200 career saves and ranks 10th in program history.
- Duke's two goals were the first allowed by Virginia goalie Trimborn in ACC play and just the second and third Virginia has given up to league opponents.
Up Next
- Duke travels to Richmond for a non-conference match Sunday, Oct. 9. The 1 p.m., contest will be streamed on ESPN+. The Blue Devils remain on the road next weekend at Louisville and Bellarmine.
