DURHAM – The Duke volleyball team is set for another weekend of ACC competition at Cameron Indoor Stadium. The Blue Devils welcome No. 11 Georgia Tech Friday before a 1 p.m., match against Clemson Sunday. Both contests will be broadcast on ACCNX. Friday's matchup against the Yellow Jackets will be Duke's third ranked opponent this fall.
Chris Edwards will be on the call for both matches and he will be joined by Christina Lingley Sunday.
LAST TIME OUT
Duke dropped two tough matches in Florida over the weekend. The Blue Devils were swept by Florida State and Miami. Freshman
Taylor Atkinson led the way offensively with 21 kills and a .228 hitting percentage while graduate setter
Devon Chang dished 46 assists. Atkinson tallied her sixth match this season with 10 or more kills and the third consecutive. As a team, Duke was held without an ace in the match against Miami for the first time since March 28, 2021.
A CLOSER LOOK AT THE SERIES
CLEMSON
Duke is 42-23 all-time against Clemson and have captured seven of the last eight meetings.
GEORGIA TECH
Duke leads the all-time series 45-24 but have lost six of the last eight meetings.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
CLEMSON
Clemson enters Sunday's contest 11-8 overall and 2-5 in ACC action having lost five of its last seven matches. Offensively, the Tigers are led by Camryn Hannah with 265 kills and a .260 hitting percentage to rank fifth in the conference in kills. Setter Mckenna Slavik has dished 627 total assists this season for 10.11 assists per set and also owns 32 kills, 17 aces, 143 digs and 17 blocks to showcase her all-around game. The Tigers are second to last in the ACC in blocks (128.0) despite Jacyn Bamis and Colleen Finney with 42 and 41 blocks, respectively. Clemson is third in the conference in total digs and features four with 100 or more digs, led by Devan Taylor (324) to be third in the ACC. Sunday's contest will feature two of the top serving teams in the ACC as Duke is ranked No. 2 while Clemson is No. 5, led by six with 10 or more aces.
GEORGIA TECH
Georgia Tech enters Friday's match as the 11th-ranked team in the nation and is 12-4 overall and 5-2 in the ACC. The Yellow Jackets feature the fourth-best offense in the conference (.256 hitting percentage), are second in kills (740) and second in assists (681). Offensively, Julia Bergmann leads the way with an-ACC leading 285 kills, 5.28 kills per set and a .263 hitting percentage. She also owns 18 aces, 128 digs and 29 blocks as Georgia Tech's go-to threat. Isabella D'Amico is the team's main setter with 522 assists while three players feature 100 or more digs, led by Paola Pimentel (187). Georgia Tech is last in the ACC in blocks (110.0) despite holding opponents to a .186 hitting percentage.
GRACIE THE GREAT
Senior outside hitter
Gracie Johnson has been Duke's go-to threat on the roster this fall, but that's no surprise with her impressive numbers on both sides of the ball. She ranks in the top 50 in five national categories: aces per set (6th), total aces (11th), points per set (17th), kills per set (38th) and attacks per set (48th). On the conference scale, she's in the top five of six statistical categories: total aces (1st), aces per set (1st), points per set (2nd), attacks per set (3rd), kills per set (3rd) and total points (5th). So far this season, she has seen her best offensive output since her arrival in Durham with 221 kills and a .213 hitting percentage. She also owns 36 aces, 102 digs and 22 blocks, proving she's more than just an offensive threat. The Virginia Beach, Va., native has tallied 10 or more kills 12 times this season, including a career-high 28 against Michigan (9/9). With one of the toughest serves nationally, she has at least one ace in 12 matches, including a career-high seven against East Carolina (9/3).
WELCOME TO THE BLOCK PARTY
Duke's block has been a point of emphasis early in the season and has been spearheaded by middle blockers
Rylie Kadel and
Lizzie Fleming. As a team, the Blue Devils own 149.0 total team blocks to rank tied for 85th nationally and eighth in the conference with 2.29 blocks/set. Kadel's numbers have been quite impressive midway through the season as she has 70.0 blocks to her name with 10 solo and 60 assisted. To date, she is sixth in the ACC with 1.13 blocks/set. This season, she has tallied four or more total blocks in nine contests, including a career-high eight at Syracuse (9/23/22), and has 11 matches with four or more blocks in her young career. Fleming (52.0),
Georgia Stavrinides (43.0),
Devon Chang (27.0) and
Kerry Keefe (23.0) round out Duke's solid presence at the net. Fleming owns 48 contests with four or more blocks.
NEXT MATCHES
Duke will host NC State (Oct. 19) and North Carolina (Oct. 23) in Cameron Indoor Stadium. The match against the Wolfpack will be at 8 p.m., on ACC Network.
