TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Duke volleyball team battled to a 22-22 tie late in the fourth frame with Florida State holding the 2-1 match advantage, but the Blue Devils' comeback effort fell short as the Seminoles pulled away for a 3-1 (22-25, 25-18, 25-18, 25-23) win Sunday afternoon inside Tully Gymnasium.
Freshman Ashby Zubchevich led Duke's offense with 16 kills while also logging a career-high four aces. Sophomore Taylor Williams notched a double-double with 13 kills and 12 digs, and redshirt senior Ngozi Iloh rounded out Duke's double-digit kill outings with 10 terminations.
Freshman Charlotte Glass added a double-double of her own, dishing out a team-high 40 assists while contributing 12 digs. Defensively, sophomore Mailinh Godschall posted 18 digs, while sophomore Breonna Goss matched a career-best six blocks.
Duke falls to 5-24 on the season, including a 2-16 mark in ACC play. Florida State improves to 16-11 and 10-8 in conference contests.
How It Happened
Set One – Duke 25, Florida State 22
- Duke claimed the opening frame with a 25-22 win. The set was back and forth early, featuring a tie at 10-10 before Florida State used a three-point run to build a 13-10 lead. The Blue Devils responded by taking five of the next seven points to even the frame at 15-15. The teams continued to trade points, with the last tie coming at 21-21. Duke closed the set by taking four of the final five points behind kills from Williams and freshman Olivia Wayne.
Set Two – Duke 18, Florida State 25
- Florida State evened the match at 1-1 triumph a 25-18 win in the second set. The Seminoles held an 8-6 lead before breaking it open with a 7-1 spurt to go ahead 15-7. Duke claimed four of the next six points, but FSU answered with three straight marks to extend its advantage, 20-11. Zubchevich recorded two kills to spark a 3-1 Blue Devil run, trimming the deficit to 21-14. Florida State posted back-to-back points before Duke responded with a 3-0 stretch to pull within 23-17, but the Seminoles secured the frame by taking two of the final three points.
Set Three – Duke 18, Florida State 25
- The Seminoles took a 2-1 match lead with another 25-18 decision in the third frame. Florida State opened on a 9-4 run before Duke pulled within one at 10-9 behind a 5-1 push. The Seminoles regained control with a 7-2 stretch to create a 17-11 cushion. Duke responded with a 6-4 rally — highlighted by two Zubchevich kills — to cut the margin to 21-17, but Florida State closed the set on a 4-1 spurt.
Set Four – Duke 23, Florida State 25
- Florida State clinched the match with a 25-23 victory in the final frame. The set was tightly contested with Florida State holding a narrow 12-11 edge before using a 6-3 run to push ahead 18-14. Duke surged back with five straight points — including three consecutive aces from Zubchevich — to take a 19-18 lead. The teams split the next four points, with Duke holding a 21-20 advantage, but Florida State secured the match by taking five of the final seven points.
