DURHAM, N.C. — The Blue Devil volleyball team is set to close the 2025 season with an away match at Wake Forest Nov. 26 at 3 p.m., before hosting California Nov. 28 at 1 p.m. The Duke seniors will be honored at the match against the Golden Bears and both contests will stream on ACC Network Extra.
Last Time Out
The Blue Devils dropped a pair of road contests last weekend, falling to Miami, 3-0, and closing the weekend with a 3-1 setback at Florida State.
Duke fell in straight sets at No. 14 Miami, 3-0 (25-20, 25-22, 25-14), Friday. Sophomore Taylor Williams led the Blue Devils with nine kills, reaching the 500 career-termination milestone. Freshman Charlotte Glass dished a team-best 24 helpers, while sophomore Mailinh Godschall led the effort in the back row with seven digs.
The Blue Devils battled to a 22-22 tie late in the fourth frame with Florida State holding the 2-1 match advantage, but the Blue Devils' comeback effort fell short as the Seminoles pulled away for a 3-1 (22-25, 25-18, 25-18, 25-23) win Sunday. Freshman Ashby Zubchevich led Duke's offense with 16 kills while also logging a career-high four aces. Williams notched a double-double with 13 kills and 12 digs while redshirt senior Ngozi Iloh rounded out Duke's double-digit kill outings with 10 terminations. Glass added a double-double of her own, dishing a team-high 40 assists while contributing 12 digs. Godschall posted 18 digs, while sophomore Breonna Goss matched a career-best six blocks.
Offensive Threats
The Blue Devils have tallied a total of 1,252 kills this season and rank No. 14 in the ACC in average kills per set (12.04). Zubchevich leads the Blue Devils with 307 kills and Williams follows closely behind with 304.
Zubchevich has been dominant on offense for Duke, recording double-digit kills in 14 matches this season. She turned in the best offensive stretch of her career, tallying 42 kills during conference-opening weekend — 21 kills against NC State and 21 marks against Wake Forest. Last time out, Zubchevich combined for 23 kills, notching seven against No. 14 Miami and 16 against Florida State.
Williams is having a breakout sophomore campaign. A season ago, she totaled 208 kills, a mark she has surpassed with 304 putaways this year. She boasts a .173 attack percentage and has notched double-digit kills in 16 matches this season. She tallied a career-best 18 kills to help surge the offense to a 3-1 triumph over Bryant in Duke's season-opening match and equaled that mark against Virginia Tech with 18 terminations. Last weekend, Williams reached the 500-kill milestone against No. 14 Miami with nine terminations and closed the weekend with a double-double against Florida State (12 kills, 12 digs).
Defensive Efforts
Duke comes in at fourth in the ACC, earning 1,506 total digs, averaging 14.48 digs per set. Godschall, who ranks third in the conference with 4.02 digs per set, leads the Blue Devils with 418 total marks. She has tallied 20 or more digs in six matches this season — Bryant, Houston, Texas Tech, Mississippi State, Appalachian State and Wake Forest. She almost touched that mark last weekend at Florida State, where she picked up 18 digs.
Duke has totaled 187.5 total blocks, including 33 solo blocks and 309 block assists and posts an average of 1.80 blocks per set. Iloh leads Duke with 85.0 total blocks, marking the most she's posted in a season during her collegiate career. She has five or more blocks in five matches this season, posting a career-best eight blocks in the Blue Devils' second matchup against the Tar Heels this season. Last week, she combined for three total blocks, posting one against No. 14 Miami and closing the weekend with two denials at Florida State.
A Closer Look at the Series Versus Wake Forest
Duke leads the all-time series against Wake Forest, 64-17, including a 48-14 edge in conference matches. In the matchup earlier this season, the Demon Deacons came out on top, 3-1, inside Cameron Indoor Stadium. Duke's last win over Wake Forest came a season ago, where the Blue Devils claimed a 3-0 sweep on Nov. 27, 2024.
A Closer Look at the Series Versus California
California holds the 3-1 advantage in the all-time series against Duke and leads conference matchups, 2-0. In the contest earlier this season, the Golden Bears swept the Blue Devils in straight sets in Berkeley, California. The Blue Devils last win over the Golden Bears came in 1985 — a 3-1 win in Berkley.
