WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – In its final road contest of the season, the Duke volleyball team fell in straight sets, 3-0 (25-17, 25-22, 25-18), to Wake Forest on Wednesday afternoon at Reynolds Gymnasium.
Duke had two Blue Devils reach double-digit kills, as sophomore Taylor Williams and freshman Olivia Wayne each logged 10 kills apiece, with the offense facilitated by freshman setter Charlotte Glass with 28 assists. Defensively, Glass led the team with 14 digs, while redshirt senior Ngozi Iloh and Williams each tallied three blocks.
Duke falls to 5-25 on the season, including a 2-17 mark in ACC play. Wake Forest improves to 15-15 overall and 9-10 in conference action.
How It Happened
Set One – Duke 17, Wake Forest 25
- Wake Forest claimed the opening set, 25-17. The frame was tied at 7-7 before the Demon Deacons used a 6-1 spurt to build a 13-8 lead. Duke responded with three straight points, led by two kills from Williams and an ace from sophomore Mailinh Godschall, but Wake Forest countered by taking six of the next seven points to extend its margin, 19-12. The Blue Devils cut the deficit to 19-16 with a 4-0 run, but the Demon Deacons closed the set by logging six of the final seven points.
Set Two – Duke 22, Wake Forest 25
- The Demon Deacons pushed their match lead to 2-0 with a 25-22 decision in set two. The score was even at 4-4 before the Demon Deacons surged ahead 12-6 using an 8-2 stretch. Duke answered by taking four of the next five points to trim the margin, 13-10. The teams traded points before Wake Forest created separation with a run to 22-15. Duke battled back, securing seven of the next nine points, but the Demon Deacons closed the set with a kill.
Set Three – Duke 18, Wake Forest 25
- Wake Forest sealed the match with a 25-18 win in the third frame. Duke opened with a 6-4 advantage before the Demon Deacons used a 4-1 push to take an 8-7 lead. The teams traded points, highlighted by kills from Williams and Wayne, tying the set at 14-14. Wake Forest then pulled away with a 9-2 run to go up 23-16. Duke added two more points, but the Demon Deacons closed out the match by securing the final two marks.
