DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision (23-25, 24-26, 24-26) to Florida State Saturday afternoon to close out weekend ACC action in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
With the loss, the Blue Devils drop to 8-5 and 6-4 in conference as the Seminoles elevate to 8-3 and 5-3 in the ACC. Florida State is now riding a seven-match win streak as Duke has dropped its last three decisions.
The Blue Devils were once again led by
Ade Owokoniran with 14 kills, followed by senior
Payton Schwantz with 12 and sophomore
Lizzie Fleming with eight. Duke was limited to just a .157 hitting percentage as its opponent hit .252 percent.
Setter
Alex Springate nearly registered a double-double with a career-high 30 assists and nine digs. Libero
Mackenzie Cole added 18 digs while Fleming tallied four blocks at the net for the Blue Devils. As a team, Duke registered 7.0 total team blocks to Florida State's 8.0.
The match featured 25 tied scores with 17 in the third set.
Florida State took an early 5-0 lead in the opening set to force Duke into its first timeout of the match. Cole picked up a sneaky kill to tie it up at 21 all before Florida State's Jasmyn Martin and Emma Clothier notched back-to-back kills for their fourth and third, respectively, of the game. Owokoniran and
Gracie Johnson answered for Duke (23-23) but were unable to hold off the Seminoles as they hit .286 to open the match.
Owokoniran hit a whopping .625 percent in the first set with six kills on eight attempts with just one error.
Florida State racked up four aces in the second set and four blocks to lead 2-0 in the match. Fleming hit .500 with four kills and an error as Springate dished nine assists.
The third and ultimately final set was a back-and-forth affair as Florida State hit .250 percent to Duke's .114. At the net, rookie
Georgia Stavrinides, Schwantz and Fleming registered two blocks each as Cole tallied two service aces. Duke would trail 11-14 before Schwantz went on a tear with two kills and a block to tie it up (14-14). The Blue Devils attempted with a 6-0 run before Florida State's Martin knocked down her 12th kill of the game to seal the deal.
The Seminoles were led by Martin and Morgan Chacon with 12 kills each. Setter Olivia Dailey dished 26 assists.
Duke will travel to Clemson, S.C., to take on the Tigers and Louisville Saturday, March 13 and 14.
