DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke volleyball team (8-3, 6-2 ACC) will begin spring conference play by welcoming Florida State (6-3, 3-3 ACC) for two contests in Cameron Indoor Stadium. The Blue Devils will take on the Seminoles Friday, March 5 at 2 p.m., before an 11 a.m., contest Saturday. Both matches will be broadcast on ACCNX.
LAST TIME OUT
The Blue Devils dropped a marathon five-set match, 3-2 (16-25, 25-14, 23-25, 25-23, 6-15) against NC State in non-conference action Friday evening at Reynolds Coliseum in Raleigh, N.C.
For the third match in a row, Duke was led by
Gracie Johnson and
Ade Owokoniran with 14 and 11 kills, respectively. Johnson hit a whopping .444 percent with only two errors on 27 attempts, while setter
Alex Springate dished 24 assists.
On the defensive end, graduate student
Franky Harrison racked up 20 digs while libero
Mackenzie Cole added 17. As a team, Duke registered 72 total digs. At the net, junior
Lily Cooper tallied four blocks while Johnson,
Lizzie Fleming and
Georgia Stavrinides each added three for 8.0 total team blocks.
A CLOSER LOOK AT THE SERIES
Duke leads the series against Florida State, 37-21, but has dropped six matches in a row. In their last meeting in 2019, the Blue Devils lost a 3-1 decision (25-27, 21-25, 25-23, 15-25) in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
SCOUTING THE SEMINOLES
The Seminoles are 6-3 overall and 3-3 in conference play heading into this weekend. Florida State is riding a five-match win streak and most recently defeated Louisiana (3-0) over the weekend in Tallahassee.
They are led by Jasmyn Martin and Morgan Chacon with 87 and 86 kills, respectively. As a team, the Seminoles are hitting an impressive .276 to rank third in the conference. They are also third in the ACC in blocks (59.5) and lead the league in service aces with 37.
AMONG THE TOP IN THE ACC
The Blue Devils enter Friday's match in the top five of ACC statistics in five different categories: opponent hitting percentage (1st), opponent assists (3rd), opponent kills (4th), opponent blocks (3rd) and digs (2nd).
Duke owns 697 total digs through 11 contests for a 16.21 dig/set average and is led by junior libero
Mackenzie Cole with 200. Duke leads the ACC in opponent hitting percentage (.143).
BLOCK PARTY MOVES TO THE SPRING
Duke's block has continued to be a strong point of emphasis through 11 games in 2020-21. Duke owns 105.0 total team blocks for a 2.44 blocks/set average. The Blue Devils' best middle blockers from the 2019 season continue to make an impact this year as
Lily Cooper and
Lizzie Fleming combined for 89 blocks and 10 solo.
Rookie
Georgia Stavrinides is ninth in the conference with 34 blocks (1.10 blocks/set). Sophomore
Lizzie Fleming has 45 (1.05 blocks/set) followed by Cooper (44, 1.02),
Ade Owokoniran (27, 0.63) and
Gracie Johnson (22, 0.52) to round out Duke's ACC blocking presence.
LET'S KNOCK IT DOWN
Duke has five players with 50-plus kills as junior
Ade Owokoniran leads the team with 125 and a .181 hitting percentage. Sophomore
Gracie Johnson checks in with 118, followed by junior
Lily Cooper (83) and sophomore
Lizzie Fleming (71). Senior
Payton Schwantz with 86 and a whopping .277 hitting percentage but has been sidelined the past three games.
Through three games, Owokoniran and Johnson have combined for 73 total kills (24.2/match).
Duke currently owns a .219 hitting percentage and limits its opponents to a .149 clip.
SETTIN' IT UP
Duke has split time between two setters this season with junior
Alex Springate and sophomore
Camille Nazor. Springate has dished 230 assists through 11 contests for a 5.48 assist/set average while Nazor has 129 to her name. This spring, Springate is averaging 21.0 assists/match.
1,000-DIG CLUB
Junior libero
Mackenzie Cole became the 24th Blue Devil in program history to reach the 1,000-dig plateau with her 25-dig performance against VCU on February 9. Cole now owns 1,041 career digs and ranks fourth in the conference.
