DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke volleyball team opened spring ACC action Friday afternoon, falling to Florida State 3-0 (19-25, 22-25, 19-25) in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
With the loss, Duke dips to 8-4 overall and 6-3 in conference play as the Seminoles improve to 7-3 and 4-3 in league action.
Offensively, Duke was led by
Ade Owokoniran with 12 kills and six digs followed by
Gracie Johnson with eight kills as the Blue Devils hit .185 for the match.
Lily Cooper registered a .344 hitting percentage with four kills and no errors as senior
Payton Schwantz returned to the court with five kills to hit .300.
Setter
Alex Springate dished 23 assists and picked up four digs while libero
Mackenzie Cole added 13 digs.
The Seminoles put up big numbers offensively as they hit .294 percent for the match and picked up 20 blocks for 10.0 total team blocks. Florida State ranks second in the league in both hitting percentage and blocks.
The Seminoles came out swinging in the first set, hitting .306 with 13 kills and only three errors despite the Blue Devils' 19 digs. Florida State established its blocking presence early with eight blocks, led by setter Olivia Dailey.
Florida State opened the second stanza on a 4-0 run and led 18-10, forcing Duke into a second timeout in the set. Rookie
Georgia Stavrinides picked up a solo block to make it 21-16. The Blue Devils responded with a 4-0 run of their own to pull within two, 24-22, before Taryn Knuth secured a kill to put the Seminoles up 2-0.
The third and final set was a back-and-forth affair with eight tied scores. The Seminoles hit .393 percent to end the match with 15 kills and four errors, while also tacking on eight blocks.
Florida State was led by Jasmyn Martin with 13 kills as setter Dailey dished 29 assists.
Duke will close out the weekend Saturday at 11 a.m., with its second match against Florida State.
