DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke volleyball team dropped a heartbreaking five-set match, 3-2 (25-20, 15-25, 11-25, 25-19, 20-22) to No. 19 Pitt Sunday afternoon in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Once again, the Blue Devils were led by
Ade Owokoniran and
Gracie Johnson with 16 kills each. Owokoniran registered an impressive .387 hitting percentage with just four errors while
Payton Schwantz added 13 of her own.
Setter
Alex Springate continues to be solid for Duke and dished 46 assists today and notched 16 digs while libero
Mackenzie Cole racked up 24 digs. At the net, Duke's block was impressive with 20 blocking assists for 10.0 total team blocks.
Lily Cooper and Owokoniran led the way with five each while
Lizzie Fleming added four.
As a team, the Panthers hit .215 for the match, the fourth lowest of the 2020-21 season, to the Blue Devils' .179 percent.
Duke came out hot to open the match with a .289 hitting clip and was led by Johnson with six kills. Defensively, Cooper added three blocks to Owokoniran's two to help limit Pitt to a .100 hitting percentage.
Pitt's offense came alive in the second frame with a .353 percentage as Kayla Lund hit .500 with five kills and no errors. The Panthers carried their momentum to win the third set (25-11) with 12 kills and just two errors.
Owokoniran's five kills in the fourth helped propel Duke into a deciding fifth set, but ultimately could not hold off the Panthers.
The final frame featured 11 tie scores and six lead changes as service errors proved to be an issue for both squads. Duke had 11 service errors for the match to Pitt's seven. Alternatively, after a back-and-forth battle, Pitt won the match off back-to-back aces.
With the setback, Duke is 8-9 overall and 6-6 in conference play.
The Panthers were led by Lund with a double-double (21 kills and 20 digs) while setter Kylee Levers dished 30 assists. At the net, Chinaza Ndee tallied six blocks.
