DURHAM, N.C. – Senior
Payton Schwantz registered her 1,000th kill as the Duke volleyball team closed its 2021 home spring slate Monday afternoon with a 3-0 sweep (25-19, 25-15, 25-18) over Boston College in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
The Blue Devils were led by
Gracie Johnson with 11 kills and Schwantz with 10 kills and no errors for a whipping .556 hitting percentage as she became the 26th Blue Devil to reach the milestone. Schwantz now owns 1,009 kills.
"Payton is a really, really talented six rotation outside hitter who's had to struggle a little bit through some injuries," head coach
Jolene Nagel said. "But she is, as you can see, she makes a huge difference to our team when she's out there on the court and [I'm] super excited for her to get that today. She is a joy. Every single time we walk in for practice, she's the energy."
Behind a season-high .386 hitting percentage,
Lizzie Fleming brought in seven for a .500 clip and also added two blocks. Setter
Alex Springate dished 27 assists while libero
Mackenzie Cole notched 10 digs.
Georgia Stavrinides collected four blocks to
Lily Cooper's three as Duke registered 7.0 total team blocks.
Duke had an outstanding hitting percentage for the match with 40 kills and just six errors over the three sets. The Blue Devils opened the match with a .417 clip with 12 kills, followed by .367 in the second with 13 kills and closed the match with 15 kills on a .382 percentage.
Schwantz added four kills in the opening frame to Johnson and Stavrinides' three. In the second set, Duke used a 13-5 run to own a 2-0 lead heading into the third and final frame.
Schwantz hit a perfect 1.000 percent with five additional kills in the third set while
Summer Brown made her 2020-21 debut with one kill and a dig.
With the victory today, the Blue Devils improve to 9-9 overall and 7-6 in the ACC.
"[I'm] super excited for our team to be able to come out with a win," Nagel said. "I think they have been working really hard and we've been playing some really tough competition. And I felt today, they came out and served well. Certainly, our offense was clicking and doing really well and I thought our defense picked up as the match got started. So that was really helpful."
The Eagles (1-12, 0-12 ACC) were led by Katrina Jensen with 12 kills.
Duke will travel to Syracuse, N.Y., to take on Syracuse and Wake Forest this weekend.
