DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke volleyball team fell 3-2 (24-26, 25-21, 25-14, 24-26, 13-15) in a marathon five-set match to Miami Friday evening at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
With the loss, the Blue Devils drop to 8-8 and 6-6 in conference play as the Hurricanes improve to 9-4 and 8-4 in the ACC. Duke has lost six in a row.
Duke featured four in double-digit kills, led by
Gracie Johnson (15),
Ade Owokoniran (12),
Lizzie Fleming (11) and
Payton Schwantz (10) as the Blue Devils hit .253 percent for the match. Setter
Alex Springate dished a career-high 40 assists while libero
Mackenzie Cole picked up 28 digs.
The Blue Devils were also a force at the net with 26 blocks for 13.0 total team blocks and were led by
Lily Cooper with eight. Duke's defense limited Miami to just a .117 hitting clip for the match but were unable to close out for the win.
Both teams had solid hitting percentages to open the first frame with Duke holding a .238 advantage with 14 kill before an impressive .371 showing with 15 kills and just two errors in the second set to win the set 25-21.
The Hurricanes had a rocky third set with a negative hitting percentage as the Blue Devils hit .333 percent with two kills each from Johnson, Schwantz and Fleming. Duke's block was also sensational with 10 block assists 5.0 total team blocks led by Cooper with four.
Miami responded to take the fourth set 26-24. This frame featured three tied scores but the Hurricanes maintained the lead throughout as Janet Kalaniuvalu and Angela Grieve both added six kills.
Duke lost its footing a bit in the deciding set with a -.050 hitting percentage. Elizaveta Lukianova knocked down four kills on nine attempts to hit .444 percent and helped spearhead a Miami victory.
The Hurricanes were led by Elizaveta Lukianova with 22 kills while setter Savannah Vach dished 44 assists.
Duke will welcome No. 19 Pitt to Cameron Indoor Stadium Sunday for a 1 p.m., match on ACCNX.
