DURHAM – The Duke volleyball team is set for the first of three road games beginning Saturday at Boston College. The two squads will face off at 1 p.m., on ACCNX in Chestnut Hill, Mass.
LAST TIME OUT
Duke swept both its opponents over the weekend (Wake Forest and Virginia Tech) to improve to 15-10 this season. Senior
Ade Owokoniran paced Duke's offense with 27 kills for an average of 4.50 kills/set as she hit .482 for the weekend. She only registered two hitting errors over the span of both matches and added six digs and four blocks on the defensive front.
A CLOSER LOOK AT THE SERIES
Saturday marks the 26th meeting in program history between the Blue Devils and Eagles as Duke owns a strong 23-2 advantage in the series. The two met once already this season and Duke secured a 3-0 sweep in its first ACC contest of the season.
SCOUTING THE EAGLES
Boston College (14-14, 4-10 ACC) enters Saturday having lost four of its last five matches. Most recently, the Eagles dropped a match against No. 3 Pittsburgh (3-0). Offensively, the Eagles are led by Clare Naughton with 337 kills, followed by Amaka Chukwujekwu with 210 and Katrina Jensen with 203. As a team, Boston College is hitting .211 percent. Setters Grace Penn and Sophia Lambros own 478 and 398 assists, respectively, while four Eagles have collected 100+ digs, led by Anna Murphy (397). At the net, Chukwujekwu paces the defensive corps with 83.0 blocks while Gabby McCaa has 81.0.
COLE RANKS AMONG THE BEST
Senior libero
Mackenzie Cole is ranked 29th on the NCAA active career leaders list with 1,609 career digs to date. She is also currently tabbed sixth on the Duke all-time charts and needs 28 to move to fifth.
Cole has been one of Duke's top defensive specialists during her time in Durham and has 21 games with 20-plus digs. She has registered a career-high 29 digs twice (North Carolina: Nov. 17, 2018 & Notre Dame: Oct. 29, 2021). She also owns 122 service aces, becoming the 18th player in Duke history to reach the milestone. She also became the 12th person in Duke history with 1,000 digs and 100 aces. This season, she owns 372 digs for a 4.3 digs/set average to lead the ACC and helps the team to rank sixth.
ADE HITS HER STRIDE
Senior outside hitter
Ade Owokoniran has been on a tear the last few games, posting a whopping .319 hitting percentage in four games. She leads the team with 59 kills and 3.93 kills/set over that span.
In Duke's five-set victory over Notre Dame on October 29, Owokoniran tabbed a season-high 23 kills to hit .385 percent. She followed up that performance last weekend with 27 kills and just two errors in two matches to post a .482 hitting percentage. She was named Duke's PNC Achievers Student-Athlete of the Week for her efforts.
UP NEXT
Duke will close out its road season with matches against No. 1 Louisville and Syracuse Nov. 19 and Nov. 21.
