CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Duke volleyball team dropped a 3-1 match (28-26, 25-13, 24-26, 27-25) against Boston College Saturday afternoon in Chestnut Hill, Mass.Â
With the loss, the Blue Devils drop to 15-11 (6-9 ACC) as the Eagles improve to 15-14 (5-10 ACC).Â
Duke's offense was led by junior Gracie Johnson with a career-high 22 kills and only six errors to hit .340 percent for the match. Senior Ade Owokoniran also added 15 to hit .303 as the Blue Devils posted a .271 hitting percentage for the match. Setter Camille Nazor dished 21 assists, while libero Mackenzie Cole added 10 digs on the defensive end. At the net, junior Lizzie Fleming tallied five blocks while Lily Cooper and Rylie Kadel each added four. Johnson also paced the serving corps with two aces. Fleming now owns six games this season with five or more blocks.Â
Duke led 18-12 in the opening frame but Boston College's offense started to come alive towards the back half of the set. All tied up at 24, Duke fought off three set points, but consecutive Blue Devil hitting errors proved costly as Boston College took a 1-0 lead.
Boston College hit .533 percent in the second set with nine kills and just one error to Duke's .143 as the Eagles took a 2-0 lead heading into the third.Â
The two squads swapped places in the third set as Duke took control offensively with a .444 hitting percentage with 15 kills. Owokoniran registered seven kills on no errors for a .583 clip. All tied up at 23, Sydney Yap found Owokoniran on the outside to bring up set point before Cooper and Rachel Richardson teamed up for a block to secured Duke's first set of the match.Â
In the fourth, the Blue Devils actually outhit the Eagles with an impressive .394 percentage, but couldn't hold off the Eagles. Duke held a 19-14 advantage before Boston College went on an 8-1 run to take a 22-20 lead. Owokoniran tied the match at 25, but Amaka Chukwujekwu's ninth kill of the match and an Eagles ace secured the 3-1 victory.Â
The Eagles were led by Clare Naughton and Jenna Pollock with 12 and 10 kills, respectively.Â
Duke will close out its road season with matches against No. 1 Louisville and Syracuse Nov. 19 and Nov. 21.
