DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke track & field and cross country teams are excited to announce five additions to the 2021 recruiting class that will compete in women's distance events for the Blue Devils.
"We are excited to bring these five women to the team in the fall," cross country interim head coach
Rhonda Riley said. "We are coming off of a great finish at ACCs and are looking forward to this class being able to learn from our upperclassmen and make an impact during their career at Duke."
The group of signees includes
Hope Frost, a native of Suffolk, Va., who currently attends Stonebridge High School. At the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association (VISAA) Indoor Championship in February of 2020, Frost took first place in the 1600m with a PR time of 5:05.15. Weeks earlier in January, she clocked a PR in the 3200m, coming in at 11:10.53.
Katie Hamilton will be coming to Durham from Westfield, N.J., where she competes for Westfield High School. Hamilton won the women's 800m at the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA) Sectionals during the 2019 outdoor season with a PR time of 2:12.85. Her personal-best mark in the 1600m also came in 2019, as she clocked 4:53.16 at the NJSIAA Group 4 Championship.
Another addition set to contribute in all three seasons is
Presley Miles. The Montgomery, Ala., native runs for St. James High School, but some of her best times have come as an unattached competitor, including an 800m PR time of 2:11.08 at the 2019 New Balance Outdoor Nationals. With St. James, Miles set a personal-best mark in the 3200m when she clocked 10:42.33 during her sophomore year. Miles will look to make an impact for the Duke women's cross country squad as well, as her PR in the 5K stands at 17:24.0.
Samantha Wallenstrom will join the Blue Devil family upon graduating from Marin Catholic High School in Kentfield, Calif. Hailing from nearby San Anselmo in the Bay Area, Wallenstrom won the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) state title in the 800m in 2019, clocking an impressive PR time of 2:08.78. Her top time in the 1600m of 4:57.88 also came during the spring of 2019, earning her a victory at the Marin County Athletic League Championship.
Rounding out the signees for the Blue Devils is
Melia Chittenden, who is set to transfer to Duke after three years of Division-I experience at Princeton. Chittenden's top results for the Tigers included a fourth-place finish in the 5000m at the 2019 Ivy League Indoor Championships, where she clocked a PR time of 16:33.14. In the fall of 2019, she placed eighth overall at the Lehigh Paul Short Run with a 6K mark of 20:01.3. Chittenden also had a 9:29.96 finish in the 3000m at the Boston University David Hemery Valentine Invitational in February of 2019. In her Princeton career, she posted 13 top-10 finishes on the track and eight top-10 results on cross country courses.
