DURHAM, N.C. – After scoring her first career goal and leading Duke to its first victory of the 2020 campaign against Wake Forest on Sunday, rookie
Darcy Bourne of the Duke field hockey team was tabbed the Duke Student-Athlete of the Week.
Bourne, who hails from Esher, England, found the net on a penalty shot at the 43:31 mark to notch her first career goal. Graduate student
Eva Nunnink also scored in the match, logging her first goal of the season for the game winner.
"Personally, I'm happy with my performance against Wake [Forest] on Sunday, and I was so excited to get my first goal of the season along with a win," said Bourne. "I, as with a lot of the team, wasn't satisfied by how I played on Friday so I made sure to go back and watch video, practice hard on Saturday and prepare to play my best on Sunday. We all stepped up, which was great to see."
After a slower start to the 2020 campaign, Bourne and the Blue Devils are optimistic going forward.
"As a team, we have come so far in our last few games, with strong performances against Syracuse and then against UNC, and our hard work all showed with our win this Sunday," said Bourne. "With a relatively young team, we've now clicked but there's still so much room to grow so it feels like we're just going to go up from here. We're continuing to put in the hard work away from games so that we can make that happen."
Bourne enjoyed a decorated club and prep career, as she was a member of the U-16, U-18 and U-21 England national teams, earning a bronze medal at the European Championships as a sophomore and a bronze medal at Six Nations as a junior. She also earned a spot on the Great Britain Elite Development Team while playing for England's U-21 team as a senior.
Duke will continue the 2020 campaign as it welcomes Virginia to Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium Saturday, Oct. 31 at 1 p.m., on ACC Network Extra.
