DURHAM, N.C. – Following its final home game of the 2019 season, the Duke volleyball team (12-16, 5-10 ACC) will travel down Tobacco Road for the first of three road matches to take on North Carolina (14-11, 11-4 ACC) for a rematch Thursday, Nov. 21, at Carmichael Arena in Chapel Hill. The two squads previously met 14 days prior to the contest on Thursday as the Tar Heels captured the 3-1 victory in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
LAST TIME OUT
The Duke volleyball team fell to No. 2 Pitt 3-0 (16-25, 14-25, 17-25) Saturday afternoon in Cameron Indoor Stadium. Prior to the match, the program recognized its four seniors:
Samantha Amos,
Lauren Cline,
Sarah Nelson and
Natalie Schilling.
The Blue Devils were unable to hold off the second-ranked Panthers as Pitt registered a .364 hitting percentage over the three sets to Duke's .163 percent. Pitt committed just eight hitting errors for the match and came out hot in the first frame with 18 kills and just one error to hit .500.
Ade Owokoniran and
Payton Schwantz led the Blue Devil offense with seven kills each while Amos hit .312 percent with six kills and just one error in her final game in Cameron Indoor Stadium. Defensively, Schwantz collected 11 digs while Amos picked up three blocks. Setters Nelson and
Camille Nazor split time on the floor for the Blue Devils and dished 10 assists each.
SCOUTING THE TAR HEELS
The Tar Heels are coming off a five-set victory over Florida State last weekend and are 14-11 overall and 11-4 in conference play despite starting the season 4-7 prior to ACC action.
North Carolina is led by freshman Lauren Harrison with 294 kills, a 3.72 kills/set average and is hitting .241 percent this season to rank third in the conference. Right behind Harrison is Parker Austin with 245 kills (2.88 kills/set) and as a team, North Carolina is hitting .206 percent this season. The Tar Heels split time between setters Annabelle Archer and Hunter Atherton with 487 and 476 assists, respectively.
UNC ranks fifth in the conference in kills (1,207), second in blocks (265.0) and sixth in assists (1,119).
TAR HEELS TAKE FIRST OF TWO MEETINGS
In their first meeting on Nov. 7 in Durham, the Duke volleyball team dropped a hard-fought battle to Tobacco Road rival North Carolina, 3-1 (25-22, 24-26, 18-25, 20-25) in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Duke was led by senior
Samantha Amos with 13 kills while rookie
Gracie Johnson added 10. Defensively, junior
Payton Schwantz and libero
Mackenzie Cole racked up 20 and 19 digs, respectively, while freshman
Lizzie Fleming and
Lily Cooper added six blocks each to win the battle at the net 22-12 over the Tar Heels.
Following the contest in Chapel Hill, Duke will travel to Florida State for a noon matchup against the Seminoles on Sunday, Nov. 24.
