DURHAM, N.C. - Outfielder
Michael DiMartini clubbed a pair of home runs helping Duke grab an early lead that it wouldn't relinquish en route to a 14-9 victory over Davidson on Tuesday, March 31. The Blue Devils (19-12) scored double-digit runs for the second consecutive game and had eight starters log at least one hit in the offensive surge over the Wildcats (13-13). DiMartini went 3-for-5 overall, adding a double to his two home runs, while
Jake Lambdin logged five RBI, a new career high, during his 2-for-3 outing at the dish.
Drew Bryan made the start on the mound for Duke and earned his first win of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Drew Bryan made the start on the bump for Duke and retired the side in order, punching out the second and third batters of the day that he faced. Duke quickly put two men aboard in the bottom of the first, after an error and a single, and Kaden Smith took advantage with an RBI single to left field, giving the Blue Devils an early 1-0 lead.Â
- A leadoff homer by the Wildcats started the second frame, but Bryan worked around one additional baserunner to leave the mound with the game tied at 1-1. Duke exploded for five runs in the home half of the second, beginning with a double from Michael DiMartini and a walk by Brooks Perez. An RBI groundout by Tyler Albright got the scoring going and RJ Hamilton immediately followed with a two-run, 417-foot, home run to dead center.
- Jake Lambdin also blasted a two-run homer during the inning, after Matthew Strand reached on a single and then advanced to second on a stolen base. Lambin's homer traveled 412 feet and capped Duke's five-run second.
- Both teams posted a run in the third, starting with an RBI double by Davidson in the top half. DiMartini joined his teammates in leaving the yard, with a 444-foot shot to deep left field on the first pitch he saw in the bottom of the third, moving Duke's lead to 7-2.
- The Wildcats responded with four runs of their own in the top of the fourth, before both Lambdin and Collin Anderson tallied a sacrifice fly to put the Blue Devils back in front by multiple runs.Â
- DiMartini led off the fifth inning with his second home run of the contest, going 397 feet to left field.
- The visitors scratched across a run in each of the next three innings, bringing Duke to bat in the bottom of the eighth in front by just one run, 10-9. Smith and Strand led off with singles, setting up Lambdin to drive in two runs with a single, followed by an RBI single courtesy of Coltin Quagliano. The Blue Devils' fourth and final run of the eighth inning came across on a double-play ball.
- Caleb Anderson walked the first batter of the ninth inning but proceeded to retire the next three Wildcats he faced, finishing off Duke's 14-9 victory.
