QUICK HITS
- Duke hits the road for the second consecutive conference series away from home, traveling to 10th-ranked Florida State March 27-29. The Blue Devils and Seminoles meet in Tallahassee for the first time since the 2022 season, a visit that ended with Duke taking one of three from Florida State. The two teams did not meet in the regular season last season, but did clash in the ACC Tournament quarterfinal. The Seminoles claimed the win, 14-7, at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.Â
- Duke is seeking its first series win over Florida State since taking the first two of a three-game set in Durham during the 2020 campaign. The Blue Devils won a pair of one-run contests, 2-1 and 4-3, in the first two games, before the Seminoles claimed the series finale, 10-2.
- Kaden Smith was the hero in Duke's midweek win over East Carolina, blasting a three-run walkoff home run and finishing a triple shy of the cycle. Smith went 3-for-4 at the dish, increased his RBI total to 17 for the season and finished with four runs scored against the Pirates.Â
- Smith made his Duke debut against Princeton after missing the first 12 games of the season due to injury. Smith led all of Division I in runs batted in per game last season at Charleston Southern, with 79 across 50 games played (1.58)
- The Charleston Southern transfer now has tied the game or given Duke the lead in the ninth inning in back-to-back games, with his walkoff home run joined by a looping, game-tying, single in the top of the ninth at Virginia Tech on Sunday, March 22. Smith has also tallied two walk-off knocks this season, with Tuesday's heroics joining his game-winning single in the bottom of the ninth against Notre Dame on March 7.
- Duke took one of three on the road at Virginia Tech in its last ACC series, winning a thriller, 8-6 on Saturday. The Hokies took the series opener, 7-1, and won in 10 innings, 7-6, in the rubber match on Sunday. Matthew Strand highlighted Duke's win on Saturday, blasting a pair of two-run homers, starting in the seventh and then breaking a 6-6 tie in the top of the ninth. Strand has stepped into a bulk of the catching responsibilities since Cider Canon was announced out for a minimum of eight weeks on March 5.Â
- In the month of March, Strand has posted a 1.356 OPS in 12 games played. All six of his home runs, and 14 of his 16 RBI, have come this month. The transfer from Samford is slashing .404/.462/.894 since the calendar turned to March and he's a perfect 4-for-4 on stolen-base attempts as well.
- Through 27 games Duke outfielder Tyler Albright has already worked 34 walks this season, which leads the country. The senior is over 75% of the way to his previous season-high of 45, set last year in 62 games. The outfielder moved to leadoff to open the Miami series, with Albright's patience at the plate and base-running ability cited by Duke head coach Corey Muscara for the shift in lineup. Â Albright has also absorbed three hit-by-pitches, and currently holds the best on-base percentage of his career (.483)
- Shortstop Jake Lambdin moved into the three-hole with the lineup change and continues to grow more comfortable at the plate. The Xavier transfer is slashing .269/.395/.559, hit his fourth homer of the season at High Point last Tuesday, leads the team in doubles (12) and is 16-of-17 on the basepaths.
- Infielder Collin Anderson will be looking to make his 10th consecutive start, after taking over at second base in early March. The freshman is slashing .289/.357/.526 this month and hit his third homer of the season at High Point. Playing consistently on the right side of the infield, Anderson has only committed one error this month and logged back-to-back multi-RBI performances against Miami.Â
- The Blue Devils announced the hire of Mike Salvino as the program's general manager on Feb. 23. Salvino steps into the role with a goal of building championship teams while also mentoring student-athletes on how to grow their personal brands and prepare for professional careers beyond the game.Â
