RICHMOND, Va. – The 20th-ranked Duke women's lacrosse team erupted for five goals in the fourth quarter to grab its first lead of the afternoon, but Richmond answered late, knotting the score at 14-14 with six seconds remaining in regulation. Junior Caitlin Barrett controlled the opening draw in overtime, setting up sophomore Avery Doran's decisive finish 47 seconds into the extra period to lift the Blue Devils to a thrilling 15-14 victory Saturday afternoon at Robins Stadium.
Doran led Duke's offense with four goals, while junior Bella Goodwin added a season-high three. Barrett, redshirt junior Eva Pronti and freshman Quinn Whitaker each chipped in two goals apiece. Pronti paced the Blue Devils with three assists, while junior Ellie White controlled the draw circle with 10 draws.
Defensively, Pronti, Goodwin, redshirt junior Ava Biancardi and senior Madison Beale each collected two ground balls. Redshirt freshman Hope Schoudel played all minutes in the cage for Duke, registering four saves. Duke improves to 2-2 on the season, while Richmond drops to 2-2 overall.
How It Happened
- Duke and Richmond traded goals in the opening stanza. Richmond struck first, less than 90 seconds into the contest, but Goodwin answered at the 12:25 mark. The Spiders regained the lead before Goodwin once again responded, knotting the game at 2-2 with 6:14 remaining in the first period.
- Barrett converted a free-position attempt, but Richmond closed the quarter with three goals to carry a 5-3 advantage into the second.
- Richmond extended its lead to 7-3 with two early goals in the second quarter, but Duke answered with a two-goal spurt. Doran fed Whitaker for a goal, snapping Duke's 7:14 scoring drought and trimming the deficit to three.
- Goodwin scooped up a ground ball to spark an offensive possession that resulted in sophomore Sadie Stafford scoring, pulling Duke within 7-5.
- Richmond pushed its lead back to four with two goals in just over 90 seconds, but Pronti assisted Whitaker late in the half to send Duke into intermission trailing, 9-6.
- Through 30 minutes, Duke held a 10-6 edge in draw controls and an 8-6 advantage in ground balls.
- Duke opened the second half on a 3-1 run. Doran scored off a Goodwin assist 16 seconds in, and Pronti later found Goodwin in front of the cage at the 7:38 mark for her third goal of the game. Doran capped the surge with 4:03 remaining, trimming Richmond's lead to 10-9.
- Richmond netted the final goal of the third quarter with 3:01 on the clock to take an 11-9 edge into the final period.
- Duke evened the score at 11-11 behind goals from Biancardi off a Pronti assist, followed by Barrett netting her second goal of the game with 12:49 left in regulation.
- Richmond reclaimed the lead, but Duke responded with three unanswered goals to take its first advantage of the afternoon at 14-12. Barrett assisted Doran before Pronti scored twice to give Duke a 14-12 cushion with 6:47 left in the final stanza.
- Richmond answered with two late goals, including the equalizer with six seconds remaining, forcing overtime with the game tied at 14-14.
- Barrett won the opening draw in overtime and Doran buried the game-winner 47 seconds into the extra period to secure Duke's 15-14 comeback victory.
