CLEMSON, S.C. – Senior
Mattie Shearer netted the game-winning goal with 36 seconds remaining as No. 18 Duke upset No. 6 Clemson, 12-11, on Saturday afternoon. The Blue Devils fought back from a first quarter 4-0 deficit to claim their first win over a top 10 opponent this season. The Blue Devils improve to 2-1 in ACC play and 5-2 overall.
Duke had four different goal scorers, led by graduate senior
Callie Hem, who tallied five goals. Sophomore
Bella Goodwin recorded a career-high four goals, while senior
Carly Bernstein added one goal and three assists. Shearer contributed two goals and an assist.
On the defensive end, redshirt junior goalie
Kennedy Everson recorded 10 saves, while junior
Sydney Smith, sophomore
Reese Woodworth and freshman
Amanda Paci each forced a turnover.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Clemson opened the first quarter with a four-goal run and held Duke scoreless. The Tigers' senior goalkeeper, Emily Lamparter, recorded five saves in the period.
- The Blue Devils ended their scoring drought in the second quarter when Goodwin found the back of the cage off a feed from redshirt sophomore Eva Pronti at the 11:15 mark. Clemson responded with a goal at 9:37 to extend its lead to 5-1.
- Duke narrowed the score to 5-3 with goals from Hem off an assist from Pronti and a free-position goal from Bernstein. Clemson made it 6-3 at the 5:08 mark, but Goodwin answered with her second goal of the game, assisted by sophomore Caitlin Barrett.
- Clemson led 6-4 at halftime. Duke registered 10 shots on goal, secured seven draw controls, went 10-for-10 on clears and Everson made six saves in the first half.
- Just 30 seconds into the third quarter, Goodwin made it 6-5 off a feed from Bernstein. At 11:20, Duke evened the score 6-6 after Hem scored her second goal of the game off of Pronti's third assist. However, Clemson regained the lead just 38 seconds later, 7-6.
- Duke responded with a two-goal run, as Hem and Shearer both found the back of the cage to give the Blue Devils their first lead of the game, 8-7 with 5:29 remaining in the third period.
- The Tigers went on a two-goal run of their own, closing out the third quarter leading 9-8.
- With 13:58 left to play in the game, Clemson stretched its lead to 10-8. Hem scored her fourth goal just 31 seconds later to narrow the score to a one goal game.
- Clemson led 11-9, as it converted on a free position shot with 9:21 remaining in the game to stretch the Tigers' lead to two.
- Duke retied the score for the fourth time in the game, 11-11, with Hem's fifth goal and Goodwin's fourth, both from Bernstein assists. Goodwin scored with 4:02 left to play.
- Shearer scored the game-winning goal for the Blue Devils with 36 seconds left in the game, as she buried the ball in the bottom left corner of the cage after receiving a feed from Pronti.
