SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Fourth-ranked Syracuse jumped out to an early 6-0 lead en route to a 15-8 victory over Duke in ACC women's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon at the JMA Wireless Dome.
Caroline DeBellis led Duke (4-5, 0-2) with two goals and two assists, while Katie DeSimone had two tallies. Syracuse used the 6-0 run to start the game and another 5-0 spurt spanning the second and third quarters to earn the win.
How it Happened
- Syracuse raced out to a 6-0 lead in the first 7:07. Emma Tyrell had the final three for the Orange in a span of 3:03. DeBellis put the Blue Devils on the board on an assist from Eva Pronti with 6:47 left in the opening stanza.
- Duke settled in defensively for the final seven minutes, holding the Orange scoreless to head into the second quarter trailing 6-1.
- The Orange extended their lead back to six in the early minutes of the third quarter and continued to stifle Duke's offense. DeSimone and Mattie Shearer both scored in the period, but a 5-2 advantage in draw controls and 12-8 edge in shots for Syracuse sent the Orange into halftime with a 10-3 lead.
- Duke's defense continued to hold Syracuse scoreless for five-plus minute stretches but the Blue Devils couldn't make a dent in the deficit. The Orange ended their scoreless stretch at 11:10, netting three in 5:24 for a 13-3 advantage and DeSimone stopped Duke's scoring drought at 22:13 to make it a 13-4 game after 45 minutes of action.
- The Blue Devils found the back of the cage three times in the fourth quarter, but the early deficit was too much to overcome. Lexi Schmalz, Katie Keller and DeBellis had the goals for the Blue Devils.
- Kennedy Everson earned her first start of the 2024 campaign, making nine saves in 60 minutes.
- Syracuse controlled the draw circle, winning 20-of-27 restarts and outshot the Blue Devils, 34-21.
