DURHAM, N.C. – No. 14 Duke pushed the game to overtime by holding No. 8 Johns Hopkins scoreless while netting six goals in the final stanza, but the Blue Jays came out on top, finding the back of the cage at the 2:58 mark in the second overtime to secure a 14-13 win Sunday afternoon inside Freeman Field at Koskinen Stadium.
Redshirt junior Ava Biancardi scored a career-high five goals, while freshman Quinn Whitaker recorded a personal-best four. Redshirt junior Eva Pronti led Duke's distribution with five assists. Junior Ellie White dominated the draw circle for the Blue Devils, notching a career-high 14 draw controls to help Duke own a 22-8 advantage.
Sophomore Amanda Paci collected three ground balls to aid the defensive effort, while 10 different Blue Devils logged at least one caused turnover.
Duke falls to 1-2 overall, while Johns Hopkins improves to 3-0 on the season.
How It Happened
- Biancardi opened the game with back-to-back goals, first finding the back of the cage at the 13:50 mark off a Pronti feed before sophomore Avery Doran dished out a helper for Biancardi's second goal less than a minute later.
- The Blue Jays responded with a three-goal surge, but Doran halted Johns Hopkins' momentum with a goal with just over three minutes remaining in the opening stanza.
- Hopkins converted a free-position attempt, but Duke once again had an answer, as Pronti fed Whitaker for a goal with 34 seconds left in the first quarter to knot the contest, 4-4.
- Goals were hard to come by for both teams in the second quarter, and turnovers hurt both teams, as Duke committed seven turnovers and Johns Hopkins gave away five. Hopkins earned the first goal at the 9:15 mark, before Pronti slotted in a free-position attempt to send the game into halftime tied, 5-5.
- The Blue Jays opened the second half on a 5-0 run to take a 10-5 lead. Biancardi got Duke on the board at the 7:40 mark of the third quarter, but Johns Hopkins answered with a 3-0 spurt to extend its edge to 13-6.
- Biancardi buried a goal with just over a minute remaining in the third quarter to send Duke into the final stanza trailing, 13-7.
- Duke battled back with a 6-0 run that spanned the fourth quarter to force overtime.
- Junior Bella Goodwin scored consecutive goals in the opening 7:35 of the fourth, and Whitaker made it a three-goal game with just over three minutes left in regulation. Biancardi earned her fifth goal under a minute later, before Whitaker tied the game with two goals in the final 90 seconds.
- In the first five-minute overtime period, sophomore Sadie Stafford had a shot saved, while Johns Hopkins recorded two attempts, including one that hit the post with three seconds remaining.
- In the second overtime, Goodwin shot wide before Johns Hopkins' McKenzey Craig netted the sudden-victory goal at the 2:58 mark to seal the double-overtime decision.
