ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Duke trailed 10-3 with nine minutes left in the third quarter and scored six consecutive goals but its late rally fell short as the 24th-ranked Blue Devils fell at 25th-ranked Navy, 10-9, Friday evening in the 2024 season opener.
The Blue Devils were led by Katie DeSimone with three goals while Carly Bernstein added a goal and two assists. Olivia Carner added two goals to the offense.
Graduate student goalie Courtney Kaufman started in the cage and registered 15 saves, just one off her career high. Defensively, Madison Beale led the charge with three caused turnovers and two ground balls while Katie Keller grabbed three ground balls.
How It Happened
- Duke was first to strike early in the first period but Navy would take a 7-2 lead with four and a half minutes left in the first half.
- Bernstein had an early hand in the offense with a goal and an assist while Caroline DeBellis scored Duke's first goal of the 2024 season.
- The Midshipmen tacked on three more goals after the break before it was all Duke the rest of the way.
- Duke scored six unanswered goals, led by DeSimone's free-position attempts after drawing a foul in the circle.
- Down by four (10-6) to start the fourth quarter, several Blue Devils cashed in on the action and ultimately Carner pulled Duke within one (10-9) with just under three minutes to play. The Blue Devils had chances to tie the game, but couldn't capitalize late with an unforced turnover on the offensive end of the ball.

- Duke dropped its first season opener since 1996 and is now 27-2 in season-opening games.
- The all-time series moves to 6-2 in favor of Duke.
- DeSimone tallied her first hat trick of the season and owns 23 for her career.
- DeSimone now owns 190 career points to rank 14th in program history. She is just 10 shy of reaching 200, a feat that only 10 players in Duke history have done.
- Navy outshot Duke, 34-23, and won the draw control battle, 17-6.
- The Blue Devils were charged with 33 fouls, two yellow cards and nine green cards.
- Navy was led by Emily Messiness with four points from three goals and an assist.
