DURHAM – The No. 24 Duke women's lacrosse team opens the 2024 slate Friday at No. 25 Navy. Opening draw is set for 4 p.m., in Annapolis. Following Friday's contest, the Blue Devils make the short trip to High Point to take on the Panthers Sunday at 2 p.m.
OPENING DRAW
- Duke and Navy meet for the eighth time in program history as the Blue Devils lead the all-time series, 6-1.
- Duke and High Point meet for the seventh time in program history as the Blue Devils lead the all-time series, 5-1.
SCOUTING THE MIDSHIPMEN
- Navy begins the 2024 season ranked No. 25 in the preseason ILWomen/IWLCA Division I Poll.
- Navy concluded the 2023 season 13-6 overall with a 6-3 mark in Patriot League play. As a team, the Midshipmen tallied 281 goals with 125 assists, while picking up 337 ground balls, winning 290 draw controls and causing 181 turnovers. In conference games, Navy recorded 136 goals and 52 assists with 169 ground balls, 135 draw controls, and 97 caused turnovers.
- Leelee Denton, Emily Messinese and Ava Yovino were named Preseason All-Patriot League as the Midshipmen were picked to finish third in the Patriot League Preseason Poll.
COACHING POWERHOUSES
- Friday's contest features two coaching powerhouses in Duke's Kerstin Kimel and Navy's Cindy Timchal. The duo has combined for over 70 years in Division I athletics and has set the standard for the lacrosse world on and off the field.
- Kimel played for Timchal at Maryland from 1991-93, amassing a 40-6 overall record in three seasons together. Timchal went on to win 260 games as the leader of the Terrapins before taking the reins at Navy in the 2008 season.
SCOUTING THE PANTHERS
- High Point was picked to finish second in the Big South and Kay Rosselli and Caitlyn Baehr were tabbed to the all-conference team.
- Rosselli tallied 29 goals and eight assists for 37 points a season ago to go along with 42 draw controls, 19 ground balls and 14 caused turnovers. Baehr collected 31 ground balls, 30 draw controls and 21 caused turnovers.
- High Point finished the season 8-10 overall and 7-2 in conference play and fell in the Big South Championship to Mercer.
SEASON-OPENING DUBS
- Duke has seen great success in its season openers throughout the years and is 27-1 all-time. Its only loss was in the first year of the program in 1996.
UP NEXT
- Following this weekend, Duke opens its home slate Feb. 17 and Feb. 18 against No. 14 Johns Hopkins and Winthrop, respectively.
