DURHAM – No. 12 Duke begins the 2024 season 7-0 marking the best start in program history since 2008, when the Blue Devils began 10-0. The Blue Devils completed the weekend sweep of Northwestern (1-5) on Sunday at Jack Coombs Field, downing the Wildcats 20-9.
Freshman
Kyle Johnson earned his second win of the season, working three innings of one-hit baseball and struck out a career high five batters. Fellow freshman
James Raidt worked an inning in relief in his collegiate debut, a clean outing for the righty.
Senior catcher
Alex Stone finished the day 3-for-4 with a three-run home run to pad his four RBI day. Junior
Devin Obee tallied a 3-for-3 day with two walks and three RBI, while freshman
Macon Winslow was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Northwestern opened the scoring in the top of the first, 2-0.
- The Wildcats added a run in the top of the second inning, 3-0.
- Graduate Ben Miller singled to left field and advanced to third on a fielding error by the right fielder, clearing the bases. Senior Alex Stone singled up the middle to score Miller from third in the bottom of the second, 4-3.
- In the bottom of the third, freshman Macon Winslow hit a two-run home run to left center field, 6-3.
- Clark drew a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the fifth inning. Zac Morris singled through the left side to score AJ Gracia and Devin Obee to extend the Duke lead. Stone hit a three-run home run to left center field. Obee doubled to left field to score a pair of Blue Devils, 14-3.
- Andrew Yu was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Logan Bravo doubled to right field to score a pair. Obee singled to right field to score two more, while Chad Knight grounded out to score a run. Gracia later scored on a wild pitch, 20-3.
- Northwestern added six runs in the top of the ninth, 20-9.

- Freshman Macon Winslow hit his first collegiate home run on Sunday against Northwestern, finishing the day 2-for-3 with two RBI and a walk.
- Duke batted around twice on Sunday against Northwestern, marking the third and fourth time this season and second consecutive day.
- Senior Alex Stone tallied a 3-for-4 day which included a three-run home run to left center field. Stone finished with a team leading four RBI.
- Freshman Kyle Johnson struck out a career high five batters in his three innings of play, improving to 2-0 on the season.
- Duke baseball scored 20-plus runs for the second time this season.

- With the win on Sunday, Duke improves to 7-0 to start the 2024 season. That record is the best start to a season since 2008 when the Blue Devils started 10-0 before falling to No. 2 North Carolina in game two of the series.
