Barket Advances to Heavyweight Finals to Lead Blue Devils in Season Opener

CHARLESTON, S.C. — Duke redshirt sophomore captain Connor Barket placed second in the heavyweight bracket as the Blue Devil wrestling squad opened the season at the Battle at The Citadel in Charleston on Sunday. A product of West Lafayette, Ind., Barket totaled three consecutive wins on his way to the championship match.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Connor Barket opened his day with back-to-back tech fall victories over Ean Winchester of George Mason and The Citadel's Lance Peterson to advance to the semifinals of the heavyweight bracket. He then defeated Soren Herzog of Air Force in a 15-5 major decision to secure his spot in the championship match before ultimately falling to NC State's Owen Trephan to earn a second place finish.
Sophomore Aidan Wallace was impressive in his season debut in the 165-pound weight class with a pair of victories to move on to the semifinals. Wallace claimed an 11-0 major decision over Oren Bost of Appalachian State and then collected a 7-1 decision against Thomas Snipes of The Citadel. In the semifinals, Wallace dropped a 7-2 decision to Evan Maag of George Mason.Wallace closed out action by knocking off NC State's Luke Ahrberg, 8-5, in the consolation semifinals.
A captain for the second-straight year, redshirt sophomore Gaetano Console opened the season with an 8-2 decision over Josh Cordio of Air Force in the 174-pound weight class. Console advanced to the semifinal bout before falling to Ben Haubert of The Citadel to finish the day.
Blue Devil sophomore Peter Chacon opened his season with a 7-4 decision over David McEachern of The Citadel, but dropped his second match, 20-5, in a tech fall at 5:28 to Tyler Tracy of NC State in the 149-pound bracket.
Senior Logan Ferrero collected a pair of wins on the day at 157 as he defeated Appalachian State's Nicholas Grizales, 3-2, and posted a 9-1 major decision over Pete Winterstein of NC State.
Freshman Vincent Lee registered three wins on Sunday at 197 pounds. He pinned Gunnar DeGroat of The Citadel 2:37 into his opening match, before falling in a major decision to NC State's Christian Knop. Lee battled back in the consolation bracket, earning a 12-1 major decision over Pierce White of Appalachian State and an 8-2 decision against Andrew Macchiavello of NC State to close out the day.

WHAT IS NEXT

Duke will open its dual match slate at WrangleMania on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 10 a.m., against LIU Brooklyn and Rutgers at 2 p.m.Both matches will be held at Liberty High School in Bethlehem, Pa.
