STANFORD, Calif. – Three different Blue Devils scored goals as the 12th-ranked Duke field hockey team completed the weekend sweep with a 3-0 win at Stanford Sunday afternoon. The Blue Devils finished the weekend with seven goals.
Duke (7-4, 3-1) grabbed a 1-0 lead at the half on a
Charlie van Oirschot goal.
Alaina McVeigh and
Barb Civitella added scores late in the fourth quarter to ice the win.
Frederique Wollaert helped anchor a superb defensive effort for the shutout.
How it Happened
- Duke came out fast, earning a penalty corner just 90 seconds into the game. McVeigh's shot from the left side of the circle was kicked away beautifully by Daisy Ford as the Cardinal avoided falling behind early. The Blue Devils' press gave Stanford early fits, but the Cardinal settled in and held quality possession over the next five minutes. The Blue Devils, however, stayed steady on defense in not allowing Stanford clear looks at goal.
- Blue Devil freshman Madison Beach had the best look of the first quarter for Duke, sending her reverse hit just past the left post. Duke outshot the Cardinal, 5-0, in the first quarter but denied by a pair of saves from Ford.
- Ford again denied McVeigh early in the second stanza and minutes later it was Wollaert coming up big for the Blue Devils with a pair of saves.
- van Oirschot put the Blue Devils up 1-0 in the 27th minute with a strong finish from the middle of the circle. The Netherlands native had a phenomenal first touch to beat a Cardinal defender and give her a clear look at the cage for her first goal of the year and a 1-0 halftime lead. Julia Boehringer was credited with the assist.
- With the Blue Devils holding on to a 1-0 lead, Wollaert knocked away another Cardinal shot to keep the shutout effort alive. Stanford continued to pressure the Blue Devils' defense but couldn't find the key to success.
- McVeigh gave the Blue Devils a 2-0 cushion with a finish off the penalty corner in the midway through the fourth quarter. Kira Curland pushed in the corner and van Oirschot had the stop for the assists.
- Civitella iced the victory with a redirect into an empty net from the penalty spot. Ashley Stockdale had the initial hit from outside the circle to record her first career point as a Blue Devil.
Notes
- Alaina McVeigh became the 25th Blue Devil to record 25 career goals. The goal gave her sole possession of 25th on the Duke career list and pushed her points total to 54 career point – 38th in Blue Devil lore.
- Duke posted its seventh shutout of the season and extended its streak of not allowing a goal to 209:43. The Blue Devils last let in a goal with 9:43 remaining against Virginia, Sept. 27. The five goals allowed in live action through 11 games are the fewest by a Duke team in a season that had at least 11 games played.
- Frederique Wollaert recorded her fifth shutout as a Blue Devil and the 10th of her career. Her 0.39 goals against average as it stands now would be a Duke single-season record. The lowest GAA in Blue Devil lore is 0.70 by Lori Stark in 1986. Only two different goalkeepers in Duke history have registered a goals against average under 1.00 in program history.
- Duke has held an opponent to seven or fewer shots in a game six times this season and is allowing just 6.67 shots per game.
Up Next
- Duke continues its four-game road swing at Wake Forest Friday, Oc.t. 11. First hit is set for 5 p.m., on ACC Network Extra.
