DURHAM – The Duke fencing team is set to host the 2023 NCAA Fencing Championship March 23-26 at Cameron Indoor Stadium. Eight Blue Devils will represent Duke on the national stage in its first time hosting the championship.
Duke will be represented by
Chloe Beittel (women's epee),
Christina Ferrari (women's foil),
Stephen Kim (men's saber),
Rachel Koo (women's foil),
Terence Lee (men's saber),
Allen Marakov (men's epee),
Kunling Tong (women's saber) and
Anneke Zegers (women's saber).
The 2023 campaign marks the 15th time head coach
Alex Beguinet has qualified five or more to the national stage.
This marks Ferrari's third trip to the NCAA Championship after earning All-America honors in her previous two showings. Zegers also returns to the national stage for the third time, while Lee qualifies for a second consecutive season.
Last year, Ferrari and Lee captured All-America accolades, highlighted by Lee's second-place finish in men's saber. That performance marked the second-best finish in Duke men's program history behind 1996 national champion Jeremy Kahn.
The men kick off the championship with round-robin bouts on Thursday followed by the semifinals and finals Friday. The women will follow with the same schedule Saturday and Sunday.
The championship includes individual events in each of six weapons (men's epee, men's foil, men's saber, women's epee, women's foil and women's saber) and one combined team champion.
Fencers will compete in a round-robin format of five-touch bouts. After round robin, the top-four finishers in each weapon will fence in semifinal 15-touch bouts, with winners fencing to determine first and second places. The non-advancing fencers are awarded a tie for third place.
An institution's place finish in the championships will be based on points earned by each individual. A team will be awarded one point for each victory by its student-athletes during round-robin competition.
A live feed of semifinal and final bouts will be available on Friday and Sunday at 1:30 p.m. on ESPN+. Semifinals and finals, along with other championships highlights, will air on ESPNU on Thursday, April 6 at 2 p.m.
