WILLIAMSBURG, Va. β The fourth-ranked Duke field hockey team extended its win streak to eight games, upending William & Mary, 1-0, on a goal from junior
Josephine Palde Sunday afternoon at Busch Field.
The Blue Devils move to 10-1 overall and have not lost since a 3-2 setback to No. 2 Northwestern on Sept. 3. William & Mary dips to 4-5 overall and 1-2 against ACC competition.
How it Happened
- After a lot of action through the midfield, the Blue Devils got active inside the circle late in the first quarter. Graduate student Hannah Miller made her way through traffic in the 10th minute, but had her shot pushed away by William & Mary goalie Maddie George.
- Two minutes later George came up with another stop as sophomore Alaina McVeigh nearly tipped in a pass from Miller. The Blue Devils finished the scoreless first quarter with four shots, including three on goal.
- Duke's defense was solid in the first half, holding off dangerous counter attacks by William & Mary. The Tribe had a handful of circle entries but only managed one shot in the 30 minutes.
- The Tribe earned the first penalty corner of the afternoon, winning back-to-back chances from the endline. Duke's penalty corner defense never let the first shot through, and the Blue Devils forced the Tribe into a bad pass on the second. Β
- The best opportunity in the first 40 minutes came off the stick of Miller. The veteran forward broke loose for a one-on-one with the William & Mary keeper but sent her shot high over the goal.
- Duke got on the board in the 43rd minute as Palde slipped a shot past George off a restart from the top of the circle. The goal was her first of the season and sent the Blue Devils into the fourth quarter with a narrow 1-0 lead.
- Duke goalkeeper Piper Hampsch made a huge save less than a minute into the fourth quarter, denying Lauren Curran to keep the shutout effort going. Β The Blue Devils held off a push from the Tribe in the final minutes to come away with the 10th win of the season. Hampsch finished with one save.
- The Blue Devils outshot the Tribe, 7-3. Both teams had two penalty corners apiece and William & Mary goalie made four saves. Β

Notes
- Duke has won eight straight, tying the longest win streak under head coach Pam Bustin. The Blue Devils won eight consecutive with Bustin in 2016. Duke also won eight straight in 1990 and 2008. The longest win streak in Blue Devil history is nine games in 2003.
- The Blue Devils move to 10-1 overall, marking the 30th time in program history they have won 10 games in a season and the ninth time under Bustin.
- Piper Hampsch posted her career-best fourth solo shutout of the season. The Blue Devils' current shutout streak stands at 137:31. It is the second time this season Duke has posted consecutive shutouts.
- Duke's five shutouts are the most since the Blue Devils had eight in 2019. The Blue Devils' goals against average stands at 0.87 with Hampsch's sitting at 0.88. The 10 goals allowed in 11 games rank fifth in Duke history to the six given up by the 1985 team and eight allowed in 1988, 1990 and 1991. The Blue Devils also let in 10 goals in 11 games in 1983 and 2014.
- Duke has eight different players with a game-winning goal this season after Palde notched the third of her career. Three of her four career goals are game winners.
